Yesterday's game could be a good thing, if it helps the Cubs move Glendon along before next season.

As for the Prior injury, DAMM YOU CHICAGO TRIBUNE FOR DISTRACTING MARK PRIOR AND MAKING HIM GET HURT!

And pull Hill or Guzman up? Not with Baker around is this going to happen and if it does they can sit on the bench and learn.

Yesterdays game is going to give Glendon another 10 starts or so. At least 9 of which he will suck mightily.

but getting him at a good price would be most welcome.

This is the type of thinking that gets the Cubune in trouble all the time, and has put us in the position we are in today. Make no mistake about it, getting him or Zito will mean we are most likely going to overpay for either one, so in that terms, we will probably not sign either of them. But neither of them wil come cheap, but with Kerry most likely coming off the books, along with Mad dog, the money will be there, but I am sure Jim has a few mediocre guys in mind that he hopes will be able to catch lighting in the bottle for next year.

Agreed, but whom do you suggest? I like what the rookie pitchers have shown thus far, but the Cubs need a couple of veterans to anchor the team.

I think it's time to trade Prior for what we can get. With all the young pitching prospects ready for Wrigley in 2007 (e.g., Gallagher, Guzman, Marmol, Marshall, and Wells), I believe it's time for the Cubs to move in a new direction.

This year should prove to Cubs fans the folly of relying so heavily on pitching prospects who are good, but not can't miss ace guys. A lot of these guys have shown flashes and potential, but none of them have been ready to step up and contribute positively and consistently.

As things stand right now, Prior and Zambrano are the only guys guaranteed to be in the rotation next season. I can't see this team re-signing Wood for the rotation, nor do I think Maddux will return. Lord help us all if Glendon is given another shot. That leaves three spots open. If Prior is traded, there will be four spots to fill.

I don't think it would be wise to come into the season with at least two spots filled by rookie/young pitchers who are either unproven commodities (Gallagher, Wells) or who have only shown flashes at this point (Hill, Marshall, Marmol). That's a really dangerous proposition.

This is why Jason Schmidt is a MUST for the Cubs this offseason.

Isn't Jason Schmidt older and abused in the past...specifically by Dusty Baker? Although he'd probably require less years in a deal so stability would be nice.

Either one should fit very nicely, we need a solid pitcher that can give us some definite innings, after going thru this whole Wood/Prior thing these last 3 years, it really is getting old, especially when considering what we are paying these guys. With Carlos heading up the rotation, followed by either one of these 2 guys, Prior(fingers crossed) along with 2 guys from Marshall, Marmol, Hill, etc.

One thing for certain, the Yankees are going to go long and hard after Zito, they need pitching desperately, so they are going to be offering a lot of years with a lot of money, almost a certain that they Cubs will not enter into those sweepstakes.

Lastly, after Hendry refusing to part with Hill last season and during the offseason, you would at least think now that the season is in the tank, he would at least give him another shot this year. If Hill does not get another shot, it really shows just how badly he is at reviewing talent, because he could have packaged him last year and got some value out of him. Isn't this the GM's primary job? This organization never ceases to amzae me.

You are right. Hendry doesn't seem to have the killer instict when it comes to "liked or popular" players. Or players he thinks will develop. It's sad. I hate it when he doesn't make the deal due to gutting his farm system, but spends 3 young pitchers for JP. I don't get it.

Listen, I am fine if he thinks Hill is/was going to be a special pitcher, but to give him 3 or 4 starts early in the year, to watch him implode, then send him back down to pitch lights out in Iowa, only to not bring him back, but has no problem wheeling Rusch out there whenever we need a start or to fill in, is just ridiculous.

Again, I have no problem with Hill coming back up here and not being able to cut it, and then we will all know. But to value a guy last year, almost to the point of making him untouchable, and then to keep him down in Iowa most of this year, I guess is the plan. Maybe he knows more than all of us, and Baker would only ruin him. Maybe Jim is just waiting until next year when there is new management in the dugout? Let's hope.

Unless he's thinking of trading Hill. In that case, having dominant numbers in AAA might give him more value that if he came back up and tanked again. Not saying that's what he is doing----but it might be one rationale.

Schmidt was abused by Dusty. Unlike Wood and Prior, Schmidt's career wasn't basically ended. Figures.

I could live with Schmidt for a two-year deal but I doubt he'd accept that short a contract.
