Is that crap necesssary?

What would you call people who think Wood should stay with the Cubs in any capacity? Isn't bilking this franchise out of millions over his career enough for anyone. I think so. Let him go away.

And I better not see him dressed in a uniform in the dugout anytime this year. He is not a member of this team.

I'd call one of them me, but I'd call you something quite different.

You have to spread the blame, and Hendry deserves some of it for giving him that kind of money for as long as he did. So Jim does deserve some too! That said, when they gave Kerry that extension, I thought it was a solid contract, especially after the 2003 season, it just has not worked out. It happens, just in the Cubs case, it seems that bad luck happens a little more often than other teams.

Is it honestly worth an extra 2 mil next season to let Kerry go and turn into a lights out reliever somewhere else?

Do you trust this organization to spend that money better?

It's a no brainer, if he will come back for a low money deal to be a reliever next year, you bring him back.

You are making the assumption that 2 million will get it done to sign Kerry Wood, I guess we will have to see, but I think it will take more, unless Kerry's injury is more serious than what we are being told right now. If that is the case, then it will take less than 2 million to resign him, it will also mean, he will not be pitching all that much again next year.

Personally, I think it is time to cut the cord, but that is me.

What makes you think he won't get a better offer from somewhere else?

The real problem with this is Hendry has constantly relied on Wood and not gone out and gotten insurance. And the insurance he did get, he relied on him being ready by May. If Hendry would not rely on Wood in any capacity, I have no problem bringing him back for any role.

Hendry should have never let Matt Clement walk. Yes, I understand that Matt is not the same pitcher since he got drilled, but who is to say that he would have been drilled if he stayed, or that he would not still be that consistent pitcher. When Hendry let him walk, it really hurt this team. Another case of Hendry not looking ahead, and of course, I am sure fiscal responsibility was thrown in there when that decision was made.

If somebody offers Wood 5 years and $50m then you don't even consider matching. If nobody offers more than a spring training invite, then it's a no brainer to bring him back. The stuff in between is up for debate. I think you have to make an effort to bring him back on team favorable terms. There's nothing to gain from not trying to see what it would take.

Clement was never that good, but he got worse because of his arm, not the drilling.

The Cubs have too much invested not to, so they will try to, but if someone is going to throw huge money at him, Kerry would be stupid not to take it. One thing is for sure, the Cubs won't be the ones throwing the big money at him.

Bilk-

1. To defraud, cheat, or swindle

2. To thwart or frustrate

3. To elude

$32.5 million for 12 wins in 3 years.

Let me know when he wants to give any of the cash back for doing nothing.

Clement was an average pitcher at best. $9.5M is way too much money for someone like that.

He was above average at best, pretty good actually. The problem is he's rarely been at his best.

Personally, I would prefer running Matt out there to pitch, instead of having Rusch and Neifi on the roster. Yes, I understand that we are saving a few dollars doing it this way, but I would prefer spending the extra money and Matt Clement on the roster. Yes, I also understand that he signed for 4 or 5 years. But trust me, the Cubs can afford that contract, and I prefer Matt over some of the alternate options.

He tore his labrum and now rotator cuff to swindle the Cubs?

I'd prefer that as well. But those weren't the only two options.

Yeah, but that's hindsight. Sure, compared to what we have now, Clement would be a godsend. But when you sit down and look over his numbers, dropping him because of how much money he wanted is along the lines of wanting Wood and Maddux gone to save the money they'd command vs. their production. We shouldn't have to settle for picking one crappy situation over the other...I want Hendry and co. to make something close to the right decision for once! And re-signing Clement would not have been the right choice. The right choice would have been using the money saved smartly...of course, that didn't happen, either.

Maybe he should've just told Dusty no when he kept saying he needed one more inning. Then he'd be branded a clubhouse cancer and shipped off anyway. Your logic or lack thereof here is absurd.
