9. Donald Veal, lhp, Cubs (High Class A Daytona)

Veal, a second-round pick a year ago out of an Arizona community college, pitched his way out of the Midwest League with a 5-3, 2.69 first half at Lansing, and he's been even better in three starts since a promotion to Daytona. Veal has yet to allow an earned run in his first 18 2/3 Florida State League innings, and he picked up his first high Class A win with seven innings of three-hit ball Tuesday against Brevard County.

Nice job kid.

Then there's the not so hot:

Felix Pie, of, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa)

The wheels have come off for Pie, whose 4-for-31 week is just a symbol for his struggles since April. Coming out of the gate hot, it appeared Juan Pierre was just a temporary fixture in center field at Wrigley. However, Pierre can rest easy, as Pie is hitting just .227 since the start of May. During that time, Pie has struck out 64 times in 229 at-bats.

This board needs a more positive attitude these days.

Can anyone tell me about Veal's stuff?

Very tender, and juicy. He plays like a caged animal. But he's soft.

Nicely done.

Agreed.

Now Harvey in the "Not-So-Hot" list:

Ryan Harvey, of, Cubs (High Class A Daytona)

Things have gone from bad to worse for Harvey who is 4-for-23 in July and down to .202/.243/.329 on the season with 84 strikeouts and 15 walks in 292 at-bats.

Rough year for Cubs hitting prospects...

Veal gives up a run and is off the Hot Sheet. :(

More BA love for Veal:

• Cubs lefthander Donald Veal has been sterling since getting promoted from low Class A Peoria to high Class A Daytona, but he came up with his best outing yet Thursday against Clearwater. That's no easy task for a guy who started his Florida State League career with 24 1/3 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run. The 21-year-old lefthander threw five hitless, shutout innings against the Threshers, striking out nine and walking four. He improved to 3-1, 1.03 with 32 strikeouts in 35 innings in the FSL. He does have 20 walks, but he has been able to escape trouble by holding hitters to a .164 average.

And Colvin getting some love too:

• Boise outfielder Tyler Colvin is finally breaking out his bat. He's 8-for-16 in his last three games, with eight RBIs, four doubles, a triple and a home run.

Good to hear about Veal. I don't follow the minors very closely. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the Florida State League a hitters league(atleast this year)?

This year, it's a pitcher's league. Jake Fox's .957 OPS is the highest in the league and is .102 points higher than the guy with the second highest OPS.

Historically, it's a league that favors pitchers.

Veal in the Team Photo in today's hot sheet:

Donald Veal, lhp, Cubs (High Class A Daytona): Maybe someday, all those walks (20 in 35 innings in the Florida State League, 60 overall in 109 IP) will come back to haunt Veal. That day hasn't arrived yet, as his 1.03 ERA in the FSL attests. He's been less hittable for Daytona (.164) than he was in the Midwest League (.179).

Hill in at #8, which I think was posted already in the Hill thread.

Holliman not-so-hot:

Mark Hollimon, rhp, Cubs (High Class A Daytona)

Not to be confused with Tigers shortstop Michael Hollimon, Mark had a nifty 1.10 ERA in June, but has upped that figure to 12.12 in July. His 9-11 strikeout-walk ratio probably has something to do with it.

Haven't seen his name spelled "Hollimon" before. :?

Donald Veal, lhp, High Class A Daytona (Cubs)

Ho hum, another great start out of Veal. On Saturday, Veal allowed one run on four hits over 6.2 innings and struck out seven against Lakeland, which raised his Florida State League ERA to 1.20. Just another day at the office for the power lefty who has allowed one or zero runs in eight of nine starts since getting promoted from Peoria where he had a 2.69 ERA in 14 starts. Overall, he's allowed just 77 hits in 126.1 innings and clearly established himself as one of the top lefthanders in the minors. Only 21, he'll likely begin 2007 in Double-A, and could be showing up at Wrigley Field by mid-season, where if Dusty is still there he'll find a way to screw this all up.

I was like, "Wow! BP is actually gonna make it all the way a piece involving the Cubs without bashing somebod...oh, wait, nevermind."

It might get old, but it's pretty hard to find an informed observer who approves of the way Baker handles pitchers, especially young pitchers.

Its not just Dusty and the way he handles pitchers. Its acquiring Izturis. Its Hendry. Its almost every single thing someone from BP writes that mentions the Cubs. They can't say something positive without having some cynical attack in there as well. Its rather unprofessional, if you ask me.

And since I don't consider myself an informed observer, can you or anyone else help me understand how Baker ruins young pitchers?

Make a thread in Baseball Discussions if you really want to pursue this.

Oh, okay. All it would take is just one response, but if you think that is the way to go, that is what I'll do.

yeah, it's hard to believe they can find a way to criticize an organization with a 95 mil payroll that has been 30 games under .500 over the past two seasons. how dare they?!
