For some unknown reason reason, Cincy seems unable to fit Ryan Freel into their lineup, this, despite his speed (which we all know doesn't slump) and that other little unimportant stat, a .378 OBP. Anyone who has watched Cincy knows they are in desparate need of bullpen help(see the last two nights as an example)...with a decent bullpen they have a legit shot at overtaking St.Louis...what about Howry and Miller, or some other combination of our pitching for Freel...he solves several problems going forward, can hit leadoff, play center, gets on base, and the Reds don't play him every day...besides this making sense, tell me why the Cubs wouldn't do it.

Ryan Freel always reminded me of Lenny Dykstra - I love gritty players like that in front of the mashers in the lineup. If the Reds start shopping him they would want a young arm or two; I'd try to figure out a way to make that work.

I'd love to have Freel. Put him at 2b until Patterson is ready. He would give this team an actual leadoff hitter that gets on base.

Would you give them Dempster for Freel? Gives them a "proven" closer. Or do you think they'd want more?

I'd give Dempster and a middle relief guy.

I love Demps...great guy...but nights like last night...and 5 of his last 10 opportunities scare the hell out of me...give me freel...we'll find a closer.

I don't think Freel has enough "value" to command Dempster and a middle reliever. He could probably be had for a guy like Ohman.

If the Cubs could get Freel for just Ohman, they need to do it yesterday. I think it would cost a little more than that.

Freel for Novoa or Wuertz. If that's not enough give them both.

ditto.

Maybe Demps AND a good middle reliever is a bit much...but it solves a long term problem, and does it cheaply...I'd sure like to know what they'd want.

I agree, and it may cost a bit more than just Ohman, but I doubt it's much more. He seems to be stuck in that super-utility role, and they have historically come at reasonable prices.

In a second.

I would love to get Ryan Freel.

Completely agree - I'd offer Demp + Ohman for Freel.

I'd miss Demp but he's the latest of a long line of Cub closers (wild thing, shooter, jobo, etc.) who had a nice run for a while, then started turning every ninth-inning one-run lead into a tightrope act.

Not only do the Reds bullpen pitchers stink, but one of them was arrested yesterday as well.
He was arrested at Miller Park shortly after the end of the Reds-Brewers game. He pitched to one batter in the game, striking out Prince Fielder. Apparently the police don't like it when an opponent strikes out their Prince. :D

ryan freel is on pace for roughly 500 at bats. i don't think the reds are struggling THAT hard to find a spot in the lineup for him practically every day. i don't think they're as willing to trade him as some of you think. especially since he's CHEAP.

I really like Ryan Freel and I think you guys underestimate what it would take to get him. He has several things that are of great value to anyteam. OBP, Speed, Versatility and Cheap. Some reason I dont think that Dempster and Ohman get this done. Probably more like Howry, Ohman and young starter. Which honestly I would do if I were in charge of the Cubs.

I agree. But I do think he could be available for a decent package. I wonder if a couple good weeks out of Scott Williamson could entice them to bring back and ex-Red.

I thought Williamson hated the Reds for what they did to him or was that another pitcher?

No clue. If there's bad blood, that's probably not a possibility.

He doesn't have a no trade does he? If Hendry really wanted to make him mad he would send him to the Reds.

If I remember correctly when the Reds had a fire sale Williamson was quite upset on how they went about it.
