Answer a few questions for me

 Share

I've been busy with a new job for the past week or so and haven't been able to keep up with the Cubs. I have a few questions that I'm hoping you guys could answer for me.

1. I read about a possibility of a platoon with Murton and Bynum in left... has that really happened, or was it just a mention of it being a possibility?

2. Who's been getting the bulk of playing time at second lately?

3. Is Nevin the backup catcher while Barrett is suspended?

4. I read a headline saying Wood might be done for the season. What?!

5. What's up with Prior and his horrible first start? What did he say after the game?

6. How has Pierre been lately? And what about Aramis? Any consistent improvement?

7. Who has been batting 2nd?

Thanks a bunch!

1. Yep. Bynum starts against RHP, which means he plays about 2/3 of the time.

2. Neifi. Who else would you have guessed?

3. Nevin is the back up catcher, but Hank has been inexplicably on fire of late.

4. Wood has had further set backs. He can't shake the pains from throwing 60+ pitches.

5. Prior only had 1 effective pitch in the first inning meltdown he had, which was a straight 92 MPH fastball that he wasn't locating very well.

6. Pierre isn't any different than you remember since the last game you watched. Aramis is heating up.

7. Neifi. Who else would you expect? :D

1. It's happening. Murton v. LHP; Bynum v. RHP

2. IIRC, Neifi has been getting most of the 2B time, though I missed a few of the Detroit games. Walker has been at DH and 1B

3. I don't know. Blanco has done the only catching so far.

4. He "felt something" or "felt fatigued" after 60 pitches. That is up for debate.

5. He was terrible at the beginning, but settled down. He said he just wasn't hitting his spots

6. Better, but still terrible. Ramirez is turning it on.

7. Neifi and/or Walker

One of my favorite Dusty line ups had Neifi batting 2nd and Walker hitting 8th in a game that featured a DH.
Of course, Neifi went like 3-4 or something that game which is all Baker needs to see to give Neifi another month at the top of the lineup.

If I recall correctly, just about everybody went 3-4 that day. :P

It's almost as if he creates lineups based on some sterotypical "way" that a line up is supposed to be created.

It goes like this regardless of who is filling the position

CF

2nd

1st

3rd

LF

RF

I am still sore that they've given up on Murton after less than half a season. I guess when Murton doesn't do well in his career all the Dusty appologists will use the tired "he sucked after he left the Cubs" excuse. When if was the Cubs that stunted his development.

Because of Neifi's presence in the two-spot. He got everyone else going! :^o

Not to mention that the "he sucked later" arguement doesn't really apply when the alternative is still worse (see: Bynum, Neifi, Macias, Hollandworth, Karros, etc.).

Thanks guys. No shocker that Neifi is playing a lot. I guess Womack came back to earth?

When is Barrett scheduled to return?

1. Last eleven games; starts in left field.....

Murton 8
Bynum 2
Mabry 1

2. Last seven games; starts at second base.....

Walker 3
Perez 2
Womack 2

3. Nevin caught 1 inning on Sunday, I believe . He is your backup catcher.

4. Wood... whole lot more questions than answers.

5. Prior, "I sucked"

6. Pierre, Ramirez over the last week.....

06/15 - 06/21 AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS

1. I read about a possibility of a platoon with Murton and Bynum in left... has that really happened, or was it just a mention of it being a possibility?

It seems to be starting to happen. Its hard to say because its only been a week since Dusty said it. If it has happened, its time for the "Free Matt Murton" signs.

2. Who's been getting the bulk of playing time at second lately?

Also tricky because of the games in AL stadiums. Fred's stats show that its been a pretty even split, but even when not playing second, Walker is usually in the lineup.

3. Is Nevin the backup catcher while Barrett is suspended?

This has been answered already, but yes.

4. I read a headline saying Wood might be done for the season. What?!

It appears he's done for the year. My personal belief: Kerry "Under" Wood will get his wish to retire as a Chicago Cub. But who would have guessed he would have his last appearance as a major league baseball player before Maddux wrapped up his career.

5. What's up with Prior and his horrible first start? What did he say after the game?

Prior only had command of one pitch and it was Charlie Brown's old "straight ball." After the game he stood up and admitted that was pretty bad.

6. How has Pierre been lately? And what about Aramis? Any consistent improvement?

Pierre continues to be the only leadoff hitter in baseball with an obp sub-.300. I think Dusty is trying to get him the record of "least rbi's per at bat" and you can't do that if you don't have a minimum number of plate appearances.

As was predicted by those folks that look at past performance to measure future performance, Aramis has warmed up with the weather...about two weeks behind Big Z.

7. Who has been batting 2nd?

See responses #'s 1 and 2.

Let's not get carried away. Retire? Doubtful. Some team will take a chance on him as either a starter or more likely as a reliever. 60 pitches would be more than enough coming out of the pen.

That 'some team' however isnt likely to be the Cubs.

You mean like tonights line up?

Uh, yep.

I haven't looked up the stats, but I'm going to go ahead and guess that Walker is better against lefty pitchers than Neifi is. Walker stroked a single and drew a walk against one of the toughest starting left handed pitchers in either league. Meanwhile, Neifi did get a hit, but it was a seeing eyed infield pop up. Walker's walk lead off an inning. Neifi's hit would have been the last out if it was caught.

The evidence is mounting. Further evidence is overkill.
