Before writing the column, Couch asked Guillen for an explanation. Guillen defended his use of the term "[expletive]" by saying this about homosexuals and the use of the word in question: "I don't have anything against those people. In my country, you call someone something like that and it is not the same as it is in this country.''

1. This isn't Venezuela - it's America. You've lived here long enough to understand what our words mean.

2. I didn't realize hateful slurs had different meanings in different regions.

Guillen also told Couch that he has gay friends, attends WNBA games, went to a Madonna concert and plans to go to the Gay Games in Chicago.

I know one of the WNBA's biggest stars, Swoopes, is openly gay, but is that really something to list to prove you're not homophobic - women's basketball?

Madonna?

His entire "apology" is fantastic and hillarious.

First, the venezuela thing. It's a defense that a derogatory term for homosexual has different connotations in his home country that he's lived out of for most of his life? (example: When I said the team played like crap, I meant "crap" in the way we meant it back home, that they literally smelled bad while playing)

Secondly, the WNBA, Madonna, and gay friends... It's like a parody of an apology.

And rabbit, my guess on the WNBA is that he's aware of how homosexual the fan base for it is. It actively markets to the homosexual community.

Really... I hadn't heard much about that.

But even so. Can you imagine him calling a reporter the N-word and then going on to say that it means something different in Venezuela and that he has black friends and goes to Dr. Dre concerts? It's pathetic. Suspend and fine the guy.

Well said. Or some Asian reporter a "chinaman" and say it means something else in Venezuela and that he has Asian friends and watches Yao Ming. The guy needs to be suspended at least a month.

OK, I'm lost -- what does Madonna have to do with any of this?

Madonna is a gay icon, not unlike Cher and Bea Arthur.

It's best not to ask.

She's married to Guy Ritchie, who lives in England, where a "[expletive]" is a cigarette, not a slur against gays.

It all makes sense now.

I haven't seen this posted in any of the Guillen thread as of yet.

Per the Score670..........Guillen will be fined a undisclosed amount of money and ordered to take "some sort of" sensitivity training.

Yes they reported it as "some sort of" sensitivity training.

Actually, the Trib says both he and Riske have been suspended. Riske 3 games, Ozzie 1 game...

I think the Tribune report is in regards to the throwing incident with the Cardinals. The Score670 report is in regards to Ozzie's assessment of Jay Mariotti.

Must attend sensitivity training...is there any way we can get a video feed of that?

I just LOL'd. I can only imagine the stupid stuff he would say.

I'm sure if the instructor had some sort of swear jar for charity in the front of the class, many orphans could be fed.

That can be the White Sox's means of charity!

Ozzie Guillen: "With the White Sox Swear Jar, hopefully we can make a little difference."

Kenny Williams: "....a little...f*cking difference."

Taint Your Wagon

It's insane, this guy's taint.

Ozzie pulled a pitcher from a game and demoted him because he would not bean an opposing player then lied about it to reporters because he was afraid he would get suspended and be held accountable for his actions. Then, a few days later, he make a homosexual slur at Mariotti then makes up a bogus excuse about the meaning of the word to avoid getting in trouble and being held accountable for his actions.

If in Ozzie's world "[expletive]" means coward, then I guess the word applies to him as well.

I think "[expletive]" also means "another Venezeulan [bleep]", which Ozzie is.

Re: Mariotti

Anyone who repeatedly points out how awful Dusty Baker is and starts fights with Hawk Harrelson can't be all THAT bad. Mariotti is who Chicago sports fans run to in times of crisis, because since he's perpetually bashing everyone in town, you can go "finally! someone who gets it!"

Yeah, but he bashes absolutely EVERYONE, even if it means double-speaking constantly. He's written so many articles where he'll completely counter an argument he made earlier.

Back in the early 90's he did this all the time in terms of Jordan and the Bulls. This is when it became obnoxiously apparent that he just flip flops his argument.
