I don't know that Cedeno is on my core...if he can help bring another good talent in, I go for it. He's not so valuable that he's untouchable for me.

Agreed.

Core:

Lee

ARam

IMO, everyone else is up for grabs.

It all depends on whether Hendry thinks he can find the missing pieces this offseason to compete next year. If he thinks he can position the team for success in 2007, then it doesn't make sense to go into an all-out firesale mode. It would actually make more sense to be a buyer at the deadline if guys like Abreu, Cabrera, etc. become available.

If his assessment is that we have too many holes to fill and that we don't have a chance of competing, then sell like there's no tomorrow.

Personally, no matter how bad the team has been so far this year, I'd say that #1 is closer to the truth. I don't really care for Jones, so if someone offered me something decent for him, I'd sell. But I'd hang onto the guys I figured as my core.

I'd hold onto the core in either scenario. The problem is the core is extremely small. Or maybe that's a blessing since it allows you to trade just about everybody.

Gonny who's in your core for next years team?

Cedeno

Lee

Ramirez

Barrett

Zambrano

Prior

I am holding judgement on Marshall and Marmol before I lump them into next years core.

Lee and Zambrano.

Although I'd still trade Lee given the right deal. I'd deal Barrett if I felt I could build a strong enough lineup to live with a lesser offensive catcher (not Blanco). I'd hold onto Ramirez unless he was a deal breaker in an ARod deal. I'd hold onto Prior unless I was offered a pre-prime stud hitter for him. I'd deal Cedeno in a heartbeat for a significant improvement at SS. But I wouldn't be looking to shop him.

My core would be Z and Lee too. Everyone else can be had for the right price, but more than likely, I'd keep Barrett, Aramis and Prior too.

Guys like Cedeno, Marmol and Marshall are great kids who are cheap and have a bright future, but they can also be valuable chips in a trade for a guy like Cabrera.

Of course part of me says we should first see how Lee rebounds from the wrist injury.

He's injury prone.

Heh.

I'm just concerned over his bat speed coming back from an injury to the wrist.

Well if he's regressed from the injury to where we say he's tradeable... I don't think that contract is moveable.

Our core is Aramis, Lee, Zambrano, Prior, Barrett, and Cedeno. However, only two of those are untradable; Zambrano and Lee. If the right deal comes along I would trade Aramis in a heartbeat, I think of all of those players he is the one that is easiest to replace. In order to get a player of Cedeno's caliber in free agency we'd have to pay Furcal money. Prior if healthy would get Halladay money and Barrett just has too much offensive potential for a catcher (IMO he'd make a great 2 hitter in the right lineup). Aramis can be replaced by many players. You could have resigned Nomar this past offseason and then used Aramis in a trade for a big time RF. I'm sure Manny and Abreu could both have been had. Wouldn't a lineup of Pierre, Walker, Lee, Manny/Abreu, Nomar, Barrett, Murton, Cedeno have looked nice. Some of you may say hindsight is 20/20 but I said this last november.

The biggest mistake any team can make is to say certain players are untradable. Players have to be really special to be untradable (Zambrano, Lee, Pujols, Oswalt, Jeter) The best way to make a team better is by trading good players who are at an easier position to replace for players that may not be quite as good but who fill a position that is harder to replace. I know some of you may think this does not make sense, but I believe it will work.

Make this deal yesterday. The only downside, is who replaces him? Pie isn't ready. Mabry full time?

At this point, who gives a crap? It's not like we're winning anything anyway.

Throw some stopgap in there for all I care. Just to be out from under that contract, and selling high on Jones would be the best news imaginable.

Whoa.....the Yanks are rumored to be interested in Jacques Jones? My response is...why the h-e-double hockey sticks, isn't Jacques playing RF for the Yanks?

I'd take Andy Phillips STRAIGHT UP for Jones.

I'd take a High A guy hitting .200 if they pay all of his salary.

Roast,

You answered your own question. In Jim Hendry's mind, paying a 31 year old, left-handed hitting, toolsy player with 30 hr potential $11.67M over 2007 and 2008 is just not terrible.

Well, my question is, where does this "30 HR potential" come from. The most he has ever hit in one season is 27 (2002) which was coincidentally his best overall year of his career. In fact; one could probably say it was the exception to the rest of his career. Outside that season his highest HR total is 23.

And its sad that Hendry doesnt realize that.

My take:

The Yanks are still mulling over who to target, and Jones is a prominent name on the list of candidates.

Once they decide who their top target is, Cashman will place the call and be very aggressive in pursuing that player.

So in other words, don't fret over the lack of contact between Cashman and Hendry. If the Yanks decide they have to have Jones, then they'll have Jones... just like always.
