I always ask this, but no one knows.

Why is it that a college football or basketball can be drafted, recieve money, and play minor leageu baseball and remain an amatuer, yet if he simply signs with an agent or in anyway receives any special consideration, financial or not, regarding one of the two sports I mentioned, he is NOT considered an amatuer?

The NCAA needs to be looked into. I have said this for years.

It's an unfair and arbitrary double standard.

Signing an agent is forbidden, and making money off playing your college sport is forbidden (by signing with the Cubs he's now ineligible to play college baseball). But since it is a different sport he can play it professionally, also the reason Zbikowski can box.

It's a joke of a rule, but it's a rule.

Note: One of the underrated aspects of getting him is watching board members attempt to spell Samardzija. :)

Fun names and pronunciations I'm looking forward to seeing horribly butchered in coming years:

Jeff Samardzija

Micah Hoffpauir

Casey McGehee

Mark Pawelek

Felix Pie

Luke Hagerty

Joe Simokaitis

Jae Kuk Ryu

Geovany Soto

Dylan Johnston

Yusuf Carter

Carmen Pignatiello

Brian Dopirak

i am really sad to see jeff come here. he will join the list of promising young pitchers that have been ruined by the cubs! i guess it's good spending money during the school year! at least it will make his decision on football or baseball easier.

So did Jeff S. ( ) negotiate his own deal with the Cubs? If he can't have an agent, was it Jeff and Hendry sitting down and discussing numbers? How does this work?

And yes, the NCAA rule book is more convoluted than the airline fare formulas

Hendry: I'll give you 5 years, $4 million

Samardzjia: I won't settle for anything less than 5 years, $5 million

Hendry: 5 years, $7.25 million -- take it or leave it!

The negotiation with Neifi really taught Jim how to get the upper hand.

Is this the "Texas Rangers/A-Rod" school of negotiation?

TexasGM: "What's the biggest deal out there for A-Rod?"

TexasAsstGM: "Ours at 10 years/$130 million"

TexasGM: "Well shoot, we can beat that!"

What about Bloom at Colorado? He made money of skiing, and couldn't play football. Also Zibby has a boxing agent.

Bloom's issue was endorsement money. His argument was that he needed the endorsement money to ski (which was true). The NCAA wouldn't have any of it though.

As to Zibby's boxing agent, I don't know how that is allowed.
