I don't know if anyone has seen this, but the Chandler family is calling for the company to break up.

Here is the link from Bloomberg for those who are interested, I wonder how this affects the Cubs' sale status?

CNBC just reported that Private Equity is looking at an LBO before the buyback. Perhaps this should be a new thread because that would assure a sale of the Cubs.

Ok, I'm not real quick on some of this corporate stuff...how would that assure the sale of the Cubs?

Who would some likely buyers be in an LBO scenario - Viacom maybe? Liberty Media? I know this was beaten to death in another thread but I still find it hard to believe the Cubs would be put up for sale before an LBO.

At this point, Cuban should get a group together to just buy the freaking Tribune. Find partners who are interested in spearheading the newspaper and other divisions, and he can just focus on running The Cubs.

Much as I'd love to see Cuban own the Cubs, directly or indirectly, this seems like a stretch ... the Trib is a $9 bil company, Cuban's net worth is between $1 and $2 bil. Of course he runs with a wealthy crowd - it'd be nice if he did form a new media company.

You think a new owner would mean big change. Well let me give you an example...two words can explain it all (if you know who he is)...David Glass.

I think alot of this is smoke. The Chandlers are just trying to block the buy back of shares by the Trib because it is not in their best interest due to the purchase of the Times Mirror. If you look a little closer at the Trib they do have stakes in Career Builder.com and some other more forward looking ventures. They are just suffering from an industry wide problem, not just a Trib problem.

If a financial buyer, a buyer only interested in making money and not running a media company, buys the Tribune, they would sell off assets to make their numbers work. They would sell off the newspapers to a newspaper operator, the TV stations to a TV broadcaster, etc. The Cubs have a value of $500 million? That's money that can be used to pay off the massive debt that this buyer will take on to make their bid in the first place.

What I have tried to explain to those not up on corporate lingo is this: if someone from the outside buys the "Tribune," there is no "Tribune" company as we know it. Fitzsimmons will have no power in deciding what happens. It will be a bunch of finance guys who care only about the numbers. Maybe they could run the Cubs?

If the Cubs were sold to the right person I think it would be good for the organization but what happens if somebody like Wirtz comes along and buys them? We wouldn't be able to watch home games on TV and yearly budget will go down as well.

Good point. David Glass, Bill Wirtz ... things could be much, much worse than the Trib owning the Cubs.

I'm fed up enough with the way things are, that I'm willing to take the gamble. I'm willing to roll the dice and take my chances. It's not working the way it is, and I don't forsee things changing under the Tribune. If I'm being overly pessimistic, it's because the Cubs have trained me to be so.

How about Oprah? She hangs in that crowd too. She could buy the Cubs in a heartbeat.

I know at one time Oprah, MJ and Walter Payton attempted to buy the Bears.

I believe it would be a good thing.

I don't have a problem with the Tribune per se owning the Cubs. But Macphail, Hendry and Baker have to go. How else do we accomplish that?

That is the most interesting idea I've heard to date.

To be honest, a change in ownership would be nice, but a chance in President, General Manager and Manager would be better.

But then again as long as MacPhail and MacDonough keep the masses coming to experience Wrigley's charm, the ownership has no reason to get rid of them.
