Is there a clause in the basic agreement that a player in a multi-year deal cannot be traded in the first year? This came up in reference to possibly trading Eyre, Neifi, etc.. By the way, Dempster has a no-trade clause.

I'm sure someone will have a more definite answer than this, but I'm pretty sure that if you sign a free agent, you can't trade him until sometime in May.

Free agents cannot be traded without his permission until June 15th. If a player does not receive a NTC when he signs, he can be traded at anytime after that date. However, any player traded in the middle of a multi-year contract has a right to demand a trade after his first season with the new team. If that request is not granted by the start of spring training, the player becomes an unrestricted free agent and is eligible to sign with any team.

Great synopsis.

The only nitpick:

If that request is not granted by the start of spring training, the player may elect to become an unrestricted free agent

It's not automatic, and for a case like Javy Vazquez, after seasons of 4.91 and 4.42 ERAs, it would have been tough for him to walk away from the 2/$24M left on his deal if the DBacks had not honored his trade request.

See Rick Reed and the Twins for an example. They didn't trade him and he remained with the team, as nobody in their right mind was paying Rick Reed 8M that season.

The other thing that doesn't apply to any of our guys yet is 10-5 privleges(Player has 10 years in the bigs, 5th year with the team), he gains a NTC.
