why does everyone hate hairston so much.

I never really got this, either. It seems to me that less Hairston means more Neifi and Bynum, never a good thing.

Two words: Why bother?

The perfect Cub move.....over the hill veteran on his last legs acquired after the worst stretch of Cubs baseball in recent memory.

Shouldn't this trade have been made a while ago?

wonder what Nevins lefty splits are? Can he play RF? just thinking out loud-

2003-05:

286/377/547/924

2006:

267/340/533/873

Well i guess the 924OPS is ok, but he ahs hit .308 over the last 3 years during the day, and has 109 plate ap while playing RF-oh well, maybe he will do something special......not likely, but you never know-

My initial thought here is platoon with Womack? Womack + Walker vs righties, Walker + Nevin vs lefties.

I admire your reasoning. We share the same thought.

Are you familiar with Dusty Baker?

I don't mind this deal on the face of it, because, you know, Hairston sucks and Nevin fills an immediate need. My biggest concern is that Nevin steals playing time from Murton.

Nevin will likely only play 1B.

who did you all really think Hendry could have acquired to replace Lee? Other GM's knew the situation he was in and could ask ridiculous prices for anyone the Cubs showed interest in. Hendry had zero leverage in any negotiations

I don't see Dusty as all that desperate to take a guy he just hit #3 out of the lineup.

Dusty has his obvious flaws, but I think some of you are overly worrisome about Murton getting time taken away.

Three more words: 1998 Gary Gaieti.

Hey, a guy can dream right?

It's not a bad trade, but how about giving that guy in our system who is currently destroying lefties and can play RF a chance?

It's amazing that Restovich hasn't gotten a chance despite the need.

Let's be honest now, we have a boatload of 2Bs so we really didn't lose much from trading Hairston. He hasn't been that good this year either. I know that Nevin lost his job recently hence the trade but getting a 1B should have happened a long time ago not when we are 12.5 GB. Nevin won't give us much but at least we can move Walker back to 2B and have more power at 1B. I don't think we will get much out of this move but whatever.

I would only take it if he's not brought back for the following year, ala 1999 Gary Gaetti.

Oh no, the two wins a row combined with this trade and a great AAA outing by Rich Hill are combining for optimism..................I can't help it, I have to say it.......

WORLD SERIES

K, I think I gathered myself.

Nice move, probably won't matter but maybe Nevin will produce and he can be shipped out to a contender for a legit minor leaguer?

Exactly. This is why you don't want this trade. Less playing time for Walker meaning:

1) his trade value goes down

2) if he doesn't get traded, he's more likely to walk in the offseason and we'll get nothing for a second baseman with a .350 obp

I agree. And hey, Nevin will take Hairston and Neifi out of the line-up at 2B for the most part since Walker will be at 2B. And he's deffinatly an upgrade over Mabry playing there.

A little too late. But Hairston for Nevin+Cash is a good move. A good MINOR move. But it's not a bad move if Lee won't be back for a couple of weeks.

Yes he will. But with Nevin at first, where does that leave Walker? We all know that Womack is Dusty's kind of player, so that leaves Walker high and dry.

And once Lee gets back, don't doubt Dusty's temptation to play the veteran over the young ginger.

um, Pedro's post had Walker playing full time: at 2B vs. Lefties and at 1B vs. Righties. How is that less playing time?
