Some teams down the stretch won't be much better than the Royals.

That may be true, but the point is that the wins have to go somewhere, so if one team is well below .500 that means their opponents are picking up extra wins. It doesn't really help us for a team to completely tank the 2nd half of the season.

I meant that the Cardinals and Astros (or whoever is atop the NL Central standings down the stretch) may have easier opponents than they may have now.

My point was that while the Cubs aren't mathematically eliminated at this time, they might as well be.

The team isn't good enough to get back in this race.

I misunderstood your point then, I completely agree. :?

Here's a question for anyone who is good with at math? Can someone calculate this...

If....everyone else in the division plays .500 baseball are the Cubs already mathmatically eliminated AND if not assuming everyone else in the division goes .500 what record do the Cubs need to have in order to win the division?

Hendry believes we are not out of it and you hear the "Houston did it last year" BS. Does anyone know how to calculate this?

1) We're nowhere close to being mathmatically eliminated. To be mathmatically eliminated, you need to be 5 games back with 4 games to play, for example.

2) If everyone else in the division plays 500 ball from here on out, we would have to finish 63-49 (14 over) to take the division as we are currently 13½ back.

Plus there is interleague and other divisional games

As of today, the CUBS have 111 games left to play. Their magic numbers vs. the rest of the division are:

St. Louis 124
Cincinnati 119
Houston 117
Milwaukee 117
Pittsburgh 109

Any combination of CUBS' wins and Cardinal losses equaling 124, will mean that the CUBS will finish ahead of the Cardinals. At the pace they're playing, the Cardinals will only lose approximately 40 more games on the season, which would mean the CUBS must win 84 out of 111. That's mathematically possible....... but I sure wouldn't go bet the farm on it, eh?

Not only that but the 2005 Astros didn't have players named Neifi, Womack, Hairston, Mabry, Bynum, Blanco, Rusch, Novoa and Pierre. Or a manager named Baker. Big difference.

Correct, but they did have Everett, Taveras, Burke, Lamb, Bruntlett, Vizcaino, Rodriguez, Astacio, and Springer.

We will not come back and make the WS, but they really weren't much better off.

LOL...yeah but I have the benefit of hindsight. There guys got it done while ours most likely will weigh the team down like a barge anchor. It's usually a pretty safe bet that things won't go right for the Cubs.
