He basically says if they go on sale, he's interested. But I liked this part...

"Please ask Cubs fans to stop sending me e-mails asking me to buy the team,'' Cuban wrote. "Between Chicago, Pittsburgh and K.C., it's killing my inbox.''

Here's a great quote too:

"Either an owner is committed to making the product better, or he/she isn't,'' he wrote. "The best food in town doesn't sell if the restaurant bathrooms are dirty.''

I think he was also saying that "Please KC, stop sending messages asking me to buy your team. I love the town, but it's not for me".

That's a sad state of affairs for a franchise when Cuban wants no part of you.

Dear Mark,

I will stop sending you e-mails asking you to buy the team right after you buy the team. Until then, stop asking Mariotti to tell me to stop sending you e-mails asking you to buy the team.

That's just speculation. According to this article, it'll never happen.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05197/538914.stm

That's a year old, and completely contradictory to the quotes that Cuban made in the Sun Times article. Anyway, it's a moot point if the Trib doesn't sell.

Also it in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

True, but the first article I linked is in the Chicago Sun-Times, so they're both gonna be a bit biased toward their own city.

Unfortunately, an owner such as Mark Cuban would never get approved by the other owners. They don't want the competition.

needing the other owners to approve the sale of a team is so dumb. Why can't there be a governing body within MLB to decide these things?

There is. it's called the other owners.

Right, I meant someone who didn't have a vested interest in its own money making. Owners making decisions based on how they think a new owner will affect their bottom line is skewed reasoning to my mind

Surely there are other billionaire owners, right? Or did you mean they wouldn't want him as an owner because he's already well known as a competitor and "winner"?

I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that Cuban wants to win as badly as the players do (and more badly than some) and alot of owners simply care about the bottom line, a hell of a lot more than winning.

I think it may be a myth that Cuban will "win at any cost". He didn't "buy" his NBA success. There's a salary cap in the NBA. The Dallas personnel people have done a nice job of putting a winner on the court. That's the key. The Cubs spend plenty of money to win right now. They just have the wrong personnel building the team, in my opinion.

I would think MLB owners would welcome him in. You would think they would be happy if the Cubs were sold. It would likely be overpriced, and it would drive the values of their clubs up a bit.

You'd think so, but for some reason owners in every sports always seem to be really antsy about anyone with an actual personality owning a team.

Well, the Commissioner USED to have that kind of a role, but we all know what that situation is now.

I think that MLB Commishes should be past judges or magistrates. I don't think Emperor Bud knows or cares much about stuff like "the appearance of impropriety". The whole org is running out of control - oversight of what the owners do is a joke as it stands now. I doubt it changes unless Congress steps in and threatens to take away MLB's antitrust exemption.

There are ways around the salary cap in the NBA which is why the New York Knicks can have a team salary of $123 million. Dallas is second in the NBA at $96 million. I'm not sure on the rules but I know there are ways around it. The NFL has a strict salary cap and there is no way around it.

I seem to recall at that game that Mr. Cuban said that while he is a Pirates fan, he would be interested in owning the Cubs if they were for sale.

I believe that Cuban is from Pittsburgh.

Mr. Cuban, your table is ready. \:D/ \:D/

Article talks about how the tribune is looking to buyback 500M in stock. Although 10% doens't seem like much, it does show the team is on the table.

"Asked on a conference call about the possibility of selling the Cubs, FitzSimons signaled that asset sales in Tribune's top three markets are not likely.

Ginocchio estimated only a 10 percent chance the company will sell the Cubs, but said it is 90 percent probably it will sell Tribune Tower in Chicago. He said other asset sales are likely to include its stock holdings in private and public companies. "
