To those who have been through things like this before and remembers. When is it LIKELY the descision will be made and when will Barret serve it?

Sometimes they will hold the appeal when the team is in NY. Sometimes they will bring the player to NY on an off day. Sometimes Watson will go to the player. I think the suspension starts immediately upon the decision of the appeal being made.

It's no longer in NY. It can be done anytime. And if the player wins, he can choose when to serve. If it is upheld, he must serve right away.

If the player wins there wouldn't be a suspension to serve.

I assume he meant if it's reduced on appeal.

Of course he did, but that's not winning the appeal.

I read it that way. But then again I study alot of Japanese so I asume things as is done in the Nihongo. If you knew what he meant, then why pick at it? Do you just like to argue?

Even then I don't think the player gets to choose when to serve it.

Since when do the players decide when to serve? Suspensions have historically always started immediately after the appeal is heard and decided.

That's my thinking too.

Nope. When a player wins, he gets to chose. I still think Barrett should drop the appeal if it isn't heard and serve it vs. AL Central teams from June 16-25.

OK, I'm asking since when has that been the case? The only way a player could "choose" historically is if he drops his appeal. If his appeal is heard and decided upon, his suspension begins immediately whether it's 10 games or reduced to 5.

That's not correct.

When a player wins what? If he wins the appeal, he is no longer suspended, so he doesn't have to choose anything. If the suspension is reduced, it's served immediately following the ruling. Sosa was suspended 8 games, got it reduced to 7, and started serving immediately after. I've never heard of a player choosing when to serve, except if you interpret him dropping his appeal at a favorable time as choosing when to serve. But that doesn't have anything to do with winning an appeal.

That's not correct. The only way to "chose" when to serve your suspension is to drop the appeal at a time that's convenient for you, but if you genuinely plan to appeal, your suspension, if it still exists, is served immediately.

I agree. I've never seen a player get to pick when he is suspended unless, like you and others have siad, he drops the appeal at a favorable time to him.

That was my thinking as well.

Appeals date next up for Barrett, Anderson

The date for their appeals will be set today, with hearings expected by mid-to-late next week, according to Bob Lenaghan, assistant general counsel for the players association. Players will begin serving their suspensions once a ruling is handed down by arbitrator John McHale Jr., an executive vice president of administration for Major League Baseball.

I can't imagine they'll wait until the Cubs come to New York, IN MID JULY, to do the appeal hearing. It'll have to be on a Cubs' off day, maybe right after the next Cincy series in a couple of weeks.

The only time players "decide" when to start their suspension is when they appeal a suspension and drop it the appeal at some advantageous point before the appeal would be heard. Its most common when a pitcher gets suspended for something ridiculously low, like six games. Right after a start and when there is an off-day coming up, the pitcher drops his appeal, goes on a week vacation to the Virgen Islands, and thanks to some creative use of the rotation and off-day doesn't actually miss a start.

And not to nit-pick, but the suspension begins at the start of the first game after the appeal is dropped/the suspension is upheld. I was in the bleachers in Baltimore when Sammy was suspended and he still did all of the pregame drills. But by the time the national anthem was sung, he was out of the ballpark.
