With Jeter becoming only the 240th person ever to whack 2000 hits, it got me thinking about a lot of things.

I first looked at those about to make it this season. The list of players are GAnderson 1972, Manny Ramirez 1972, Mike Piazza 1962, ARod 1951, Mr. Pee/Capt. Bad Attitude 1932, Johnny Damon 1854, Vinny Castilla 1853, and Chipper Jones 1852. While it is a long shot, i wonder if any team has ever had 3 players cross 2k in hits in the same season? Johnny Damon would need 211 hits this season, which he has only done once in his career.

After seeing the list of Yankee All Time hits leaders, I wanted to see the Cubs list. Only 8 Cubs have 2000 hits as Cubs- Anson, Banks, Williams, Sandberg, Grace, Hack, Santo, and Jimmy Ryan. Anson and Ryan were both outside the considered modern era- so most of us have been fortunate enough to see at least 3 of these guys play. Only Hack would be considered an old Timer in this sense.

I would have to say the only Cub that I think could make the 2k Cub hits right now would be Ronny Cedeno. Sure i know it is way early in his career, but 71 hits so far and only 23. If he could continue and stick with us over the coming years, he might have a shot.

I like Murton's chances way better than I like Cedeno's.

So far in their young careers, Murton is averaging .89 hits per game and Cedeno is averaging .83 hits per game. Cedeno is 2 years younger and has better speed than Murton. I'd certainly like both to reach that milestone and both are fairly even right now though neither one even has 100 total hits in their careers.

Cedeno may reach 2000 hits but he'd do it with an on-base of .305, which is the big problem here.
