Baker wont be fired untill at least the all star break, Hendry has said that he will give baker the chance to turn this around with a healthy team. Lee will be back in about 2 week (possibly), Prior will be back just after that (who really knows though). the cubs will have to show some life between the time those 2 come back and the all star break, otherwise Baker is gone. The injury excuse wont be able to be used once they are back and then Hendry and macphail will have to look at baker. However if the cubs start winning series after the 2 big names come back, Baker will likely be extended at the all star break.

in other words, it might not mean the season but june is a huge month in terms of what the cubs will do with baker.

at this point i actually want to see what he can do, we were a decent team before Lee's injury and while lee wont be the lee of 2005 right away, it will force other teams to make adjustments.

I think that there will be a small push in June that may lead to being ~ 5 games under .500 and talk about "sneaking into the wild card in a weak NL" but they will end up not being able to push the record any further and you'll see some minor trades/callups starting around the deadline but nothing that makes any impact. Baker isn't fired, but isn't extended.

I think that's about right. Back to mediocrity we go. Woo hoo.

I'd rather completely suck then win 70 games this year.

Anyone with the same mindset?

I agree, the only way to get any change is for the team to keep losing. Hate to say it. Lee will only make them better and so will prior and wood, even if they aren't at their best. This is a .500 team, once healthy, which is good enough for a Dusty extension...gawd, why did my father have to make me a cubs fan?

We could lose all our games and Hendry will still extend Dusty. BTW - Cesar, shouldn't you add "DJ" Darrin Jackson and Mike North to your list of broadcasters who need to be punched?

Yeah, I have to agree. When Hendry said he was going to give Dusty every chance to turn this thing around I believe he was talking about through the 2008 season.

I'd really just be happy with the Cubs doing as well as they can without making any short sighted moves. IMO 70-92 is completely terrible and anything worse would be a horrible, horrible embarrassment. It's too bad this team is heading in that direction.

Also-DJ and Mike North are great suggestions. I was actually going to add DJ after the Cubs-Sox series, but I forgot or something.

Dusty needs to be fired end of story. BTW - Woody Paige is another guy who should be punched. He's such an annoying prick.

I completely agree that Dusty needs to go, but it isn't in me to root against the team.

If it gets Dusty fired, I'm all for it.

Absolutely. Much more entertaining to be completely terrible than disgustingly mediocre.

I would never root against this team. Its not their fault that the GM put them on the same field even though several of them should be in AAA, the Northern League, or the scrap heap. I will boo them when they make fundamental errors such as the horrendous fielding we have witnessed over the last few days, but I will never root against the possibility of success.

I do, however, root against management's philosophy that led to the roster we have, and wish they would trade the parts that have some value (Walker, Pierre, Maddux) and let our prospects play out the string. Find out what you have to build around Lee, ARam and Barrett, and then go out this off-season and make a splash.

The only way Hendry will make a splash is if he falls into the hotel pool.

I wouldn't worry too much (those who would like to see Dusty fired, but would feel bad rooting against the team). We're 18-30 right now. We've got at least 14 games before DLee or Prior come back. With the way we're playing and who we're playing, going 5-9 or 4-10 on that stretch is a real possibility. Hell 0-14 is...

So lets say we go 5-9, that's going to put us at 23-39, 100 games left. If it's true we're a .500 at best team even when healthy, then our final record should be 73-89, pretty damn near disaster.

I can't see Dusty being extended for 73-89, but I'm sure the Cubs will prove me wrong :(

"Imagine if the Cardinals lost Pujols, Mulder, and Carpenter? Dusty's done an unbelievable job with this team-they never lost faith, stayed together throughout the rough stretch and rallied to 73 victories. This gives us a lot to look forward to next year, when we'll have Woody for a whole year, Prior will be back from his surgery after week three, and Derrek will be here for the full year. For that, Dusty has done nothing short of an amazing job and I'm proud to announce his three year, $15 million deal."

Except I don't believe Wood will be back. Prior might be back by week 3 in June if we're lucky, and as good as Lee is, surrounded by the likes of Neifi, Jones, Hairston and Pierre it doesn't look promising.

I would be incredibly surprised if any of those 3 are on the roster next year.

Any other organization and I would agree.
