MacPhail says some dumb thing about not driving runs in, Dusty complains about not getting breaks, Hendry says he has faith in Dusty.

Clearly no accountability, but maybe these guys are really that stupid. How come no reporter has cited our statistics of being LAST or near LAST in

OBP, SLG, BB's, Runs, etc.

Where is the accountability that these idiots are being held to by the reporters? Really it's all we have left.

I don't know what the reporters are thinking, but when I heard Dusty talk about the first pitch of an at-bat being the best pitch to hit, any remaining faith I had in the guy evaporated.

No wonder we aren't drawing walks or enticing the pitcher to groove a fastball on a 3-1 count. They are practically ordered not to!

Hasn't Bruce asked Hendry?

I think he's written scathing articles that have mentioned the lack of OBP in the organizations philosophy. Which is awesome. Kudos to Bruce.

But I have never heard ONE interview question asking Hendry about OBP versus guys who can run and catch the ball with tools.

Something like

"Why have focused on toolsy athletic players with speed, instead of guys that can get on base?" or

"You are last or near last in OBP, SLG, OPS, Runs, RBI, HR, BB. How can that all be attributed to bad luck? Shouldn't a new approach of patience be advocated to those struggling, rather than aggressiveness?" or

"your manager once said BB's are clogging bases. Do you see that as a negative rammification towards why this team has such a poor OBP?"

It would be a bad time for that, unfortunately, because they're sucking at everything.

Of course, I doubt he'd say anything other than blame things on the lack of clutch hitting.

But he does need to be taken to task, especially once Lee comes back so he doesn't have that excuse.

Here's something I would love to see:

You all have seen that long Bonds sign in (is it?) soccer's sig. Every home game, as often as possible before the trade deadline, I'd like to see a sign of similar proportions that says, "IT'S ABOUT THE OBP, STUPID" hovering just above the juniper bushes in center.

Yes, it is in my sig (as you can see below). Obviously asking questions isn't getting the point across to Hendry and Dusty. We could also have a sign that says "WALKS CLOG UP THE BASES."

Or how about this one:

Read my stuff over the past few weeks. I constantly mention it and ask about it. How do you know nobody has asked about it? I ask about it every day and write about it more than anybody. This is an organization that clearly values other stats.

But why? How can they continue to deny that speed does no good if you can't get on base or that really good defense will only result in all of the runs being earned in yet another loss? At what point do they look at the standings and statistics and say "gee, maybe we're doing this wrong"?

You'd think it would kick in at any time now. I don't get their stubborn nature over this.

Uh, I didn't write "thumbs their noses at stats." They don't. They just seem to value the wrong ones.

If Jim were to stress stats, I'd imagine the first one they'd look at is "clutchness."

Hendry strikes me as a GM who would rather take Jeter over A-Rod because of Derek's fewer walks and greater clutchness.

Could MacPhail/Hendry's concern over the appearance of fans and the media dictating personnel moves be so great that they are purposefully and spitefully rejecting the call for OBP, moderation in pitch counts, etc? Edited by 3Dog

i know, sorry. It's a thing we do here, editing each others posts. Didn't intend to misrepresent you. When I realized whose post I had edited I immediately went to fix but it was too late. It won't happen again.

I believe spite plays a role, but it's mainly their spite toward the modern objective analysis in the game in general, and their devotion to conventional wisdom.

I think it's pretty clear they rely on stats, but it's all the wrong ones. They talked about trying to go out and find guys who hit with RISP, when in fact what they need is guys who hit in general. There is little to no correlation year over year with splits like that. Andy thinks the problem is a lack of clutch hits, when in fact the hitters are hitting in "clutch situations" about the same as they are normally, which is to say, not well.

Teams can go a long way in any given year if all the pieces fall into place and guys hit career years, and have a string of magical clutchness. But that's nothing you can plan for. The Cubs seem to think they can plan the right clutch team. They seem to think that all they need is a bunch of athletes with the right mindset and they can go out and accomplish anything. It's a noble, but ignorant view of the sport of baseball. Maybe it's Hendry's college background that has him so infatuated with the rah-rah, tough guy, macho, overly aggressive idea of how to play baseball.

There just seem to be a group of people who seem to resent sabermetrics, Moneyball, whatever you want to call it, and will go to lengths to somehow defy its logic or prove it wrong. Joe Morgan is the spokesman for this movement

In my opinion, previous moves indicate that Hendry listens. The media and local fans have been crying loudly over the past couple years about 2 things: Bad bullpen and lack of a leadoff hitter. Over the offseason, Hendry went after both with such a bloodlust that he traded away half the farm system for the leadoff guy and paid amounts that almost all observers considered borderline insane for Howry and Eyre.

You might say he did this to cover his arse. If you make all the moves that the angry mob wants you to make, when they backfire, you can say, "Hey, everybody in the city screamed that we needed a leadoff man, so I looked in the "proven veteran reputation rankings" and saw that Pierre was best available so I did what it took to get him. You can't criticize me no. I did what you asked." He could say something similar about Howry and Eyre.

What we need now is for the OPS crowd to become the new angry mob. At that point, based on past experience, we might see some action. (who am I kidding?)However, this team is so engrossed in the absolute opposite of this direction that almost their entire farm system is loaded with players just like the dregs we have up in the majors. There is very little, if any, offensive talent. But we have a lot of guys who ocasionally hit aggressive singles, provide athleticism and run real fast.
