This seems pretty plausible, so here goes....

Say Kerry Wood pitches the remainder of the season and finishes w/ a 4.30 ERA. What type of deal should he be offered?? A Nomar 1-yr. deal w/ incentives would be ideal, but with many teams pitching starved I can't see Wood taking this.

Should the Cubs give him a 3 year deal???

One year guaranteed, with incentives. Two additional option years that vest with IP requirements.

Something like 4 million + 1 million for 150 IP and 2 more million for 200 IP. The option years would have a higher base, say 6 million, with incentives for 200 IP. The option years would vest with 190+ IP in the preceding season.

I don't think that performance incentives are necessary, since we know that when Wood is 100%, he is very good.

If he likes Chicago as much as it seems, he'd go for it, or maybe even less.

If KW finishes the season with those numbers....he would be considered the TOP FA pitcher available, and I almost positive that he could get a long-term deal.

And no, the Cubs should cut bait---either way---on Wood this offseason. It is apparent the young man needs a change of scenery.

Fixed.
