Didn't see this mentioned earlier. It's a subscriber-only mock, so I'll just cut and paste the Cubs' pick:

13. CUBS. Chicago needs position prospects, and Rowell would fit the bill. If the Orioles take him at No. 9, the Cubs would shift gears and go with another high school bat, Washington first baseman/outfielder Travis Snider or California catcher Hank Conger.

Projected Pick: Bill Rowell.

They have Andrew Miller going first and Luke Hochevar going 5th to the Mariners.

They have Scherzer going to the Rangers don't they? He's the guy I want if he falls.

Welcome aboard!

There are a few others on the board who are in total agreement with you. Apparently Scherzer would be a lock to go Top 5 if he managed to stay healthy this season.

BA's comments on Rowell in their draft tracker:

17. Bill Rowell, 3b, Bishop Eustace Prep, Sewell, N.J.

Struggled in his matchup with the best pitcher in New Jersey, but he has big lefthanded power and some polish and will go good.

In the Best Tools section, in the HS ranks, he gets #3 for best pure hitter, #2 for best power hitter, and #2 for best strike zone judgment. He doesn't sound like a Cub in the making. :(

After seeing IMB's video I am really hoping the Cubs draft Rowell.

In the interest of full disclosure I must say I know absolutely nothing about any of the prospects except for what I read from you people.

Good thing we'll be picking waaaaaaay higher than 13

I don't follow.

He's probably confusing the up-coming draft (based on last year's record) with next year's draft (based on this year's record).

Yes, I'm probably an idiot :x

So, who are we getting next year?

To be fair, he's just swinging at batting practice fastballs. Bob Hamelin used to look amazing doing that, too. And, if I remember correctly, the Cubs became infatuated with Ryan Harvey after he put on a display for them during batting practice.

But, I do like to see that the kid has a very good eye at the plate for a high school player. He'll likely do well with whatever team drafts him, after the Cubs draft some fast guy with a rocket arm who has no clue what to swing at or what not to swing at.

I'm tired of toolsy High School players. If there is a college hitter that can be taken with the Cubs pick, I would rather have a kid that has a better chance at reaching his potential, over some raw HS with enormous potential. If Stubbs/Longoria are still there, I'd take them over any HSer right now. The Cubs haven't hit with a HSer in the first rd in yrs. CPatt/Montanez/Dopirak/Harvey are either coloassal busts, or momentual busts. So, how about the Cubs go after a college hitter---if applicable---in the first rd.

I am on the Drew Stubbs bandwagon (or is it bandwgn?)

Drew Stubbs is the antithesis to what I'm looking for the Cubs to go after in a position player. He's all tools and all too often has little clue at the plate.

In other words, a raw college player!

...as opposed to a raw high schooler. Hmmmmmmmmmmm...

Too bad Hendry and company are in charge of this draft. Maybe next June we'll have another GM to pick since it'll be a pretty high pick.

Actually, the front office hasn't been too bad when it comes to drafting, especially pitchers. I'll be a bit worried if they take a raw position player, though.

I think the pitchers have been average or above but the postion players have been far below average IMO.

I'd say they do a pretty good job with drafting pitchers, although their infatuation with pitchers who are freakin' tall has been rather odd.

But yeah, their position player drafting has produced vague hits and massive misses.

I want Hochevar, Lincecum or Morrow to fall but will definitely not complain about Rowell. I want the Cubs to stay away from a pitcher who's rated higher but falls due to injury (i.e. Scherzer)
