HI,

I'm from the hometown of Brandon Sing. He seemed to show promise at first, but since he got sent back down, he's had a tough time. Every Saturday in our local paper they run the stats of area guys in the Minors. I see that this week Sing was sent to AA from AAA. WOW. Does anyone know what happened? Is it mental from not making the squad?

I don't agree or disagree with your statement, but just curious why you think that? I know they said in Spring Training he had issues with defense. Is that it?

He's always been pretty old for his level when he's had success, and he was unable to continue the success he had in A and AA at Iowa this year offensively. While he's not an abomination at 1B or in the OF, his defense isn't going to be considered a plus. But basically he's been very old for the levels he's had success at, and was terrible in AAA before he was demoted.

Apparently he was having really bad allergy problems to start the season, especially with his eyes.

Hopefully he can get himself readjusted down in AA. He'd make a nice right handed power option off the bench some day.

What TT said, plus any team could have had him for nothing this offseason and no one wanted him.

Brandon put up monster numbers in 2004 and 2005 in High-A and Double-A ball when he was 23 and 24 years old respectively. I got news for you folks, that's the average age for a player in High-A and Double-A ball. Had Brandon put up large numbers in Double-A at 26, he would be considered old..24 ain't old, it's average.

Is Brandon a big-time prospect in the organization?? Not at this time, but he can be a player to watch if he gets his offensive problems straightened out.

That's what I was told in Nashville a couple of weeks ago. When I asked about the decline in the power numbers he said that he was having allergy issues that started out in Arizona. He said he was having a tough time reading pitches because he was having trouble seeing the ball.

A 24 year old that wants to be considered a prospect is old for AA. Just about everyone on the high side of the average is roster filler, non-prospects. This is especially true in Sing's case because he was a High School draftee, so it's not like he just hasn't had the time in the system to advance that far.

I hope he works it out. He's kind of a local celebrity here, and it's good for the younger kids to have something real to relate to to shoot for. Plus, he's playing for "our" (Cubs) team. He was a good player all the way through. Played at my son's junior high and he's on the plaques and trophies and all that. Got signed out of a VERY mediocre h.s. program, and that's saying a lot. He's got the talent... time to regroup some.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I was able to visit with Brandon after the game tonight. Brandon is still having trouble with his vision and will be getting looked at next week. Brandon is a great guy, I hate that he's going through this.

Ron was gracious enough to answer my question about Sing during the broadcast tonight. Brandon was told that he has "dry eyes" and has been given some drops to help it.
