my prediction is:

they'll make the annual half-hearted PR run @ soriano. a month or so ago, i thought they'd really pursue him, but soriano's playing well above expectations, so the cubs will keep a safe distance.

they'll focus on mulder & possibly carlos lee, but lee will need to give them a hometown discount. cliff floyd's a strong possibility. they could capture some lightning, he's a lefthanded power hitter & he's from chicago, so they could get a discount.

If Walker isn't back, Soriano or Loretta short term until EPatt is ready.

Move Jones to Center if he isn't traded and get Guillen for RF.

I like the move for Zito, but Mulder scares me a lot. I would also be on board with Schmidt.

C Barrett

1B Lee

2B Soriano/Loretta

SS Cedeno

3B ARam

LF Murton

CF Jones

RF Guillen

Z, Prior, Schmidt, Marshall, and another of the young guys

Howry, Eyre, Dempster, Ohman, Wuertz, Novoa

Top of the order is Loretta and Murton or Murton Cedeno. Lots of thunder behind them if they get on at a decent clip.

You aren't getting Soriano short-term. He's going to be looking for something like a 5 year $60m deal.

Isn't he 30 years old now?

Yes, but I was talking about what he's going to want, not what should be offered. Somebody will pay big for him despite the unimpressive OPS+ numbers. He peaked at 26 (fka 24). Maybe he can maintain his current pace at beat his past peak this season. That would be ideal for negotiating purposes. But not so much for his next team.

The way Soriano is hitting right now I wonder if he is more comfortable in left now? He may want to stay in the OF and if he does how would that work out for the Cubs? Would they still be interested?

I think the Cubs interest in Sori and other players as well is going to depend greatly on what they do with the pitching. If they let Maddux and Wood go, they will have to fill two holes in the rotation.

I can see Hendry letting one of Hill/Guzman/Ryu have a shot, but not two. So, the rotation would be Zambrano/Prior/Marshall and whoever the Cubs can sign. I think pitching might be the focus over a hitter, even if that may not be the direction I'd take.

Cubs rotation as of March 2007 ~ Z, Prior, Mulder, Marshall and Guzman.

On April 2, 2007, Prior & Guzman are placed on the 15-day DL.

Don't forget Marmol. I think he has an outside shot at the rotation next year as well.

I also think there's a possibility Wood is back (at a lower rate).

Yeah, I was more referring to getting Loretta short term due to age. I agree, no way soriano takes a 2-3 yr deal.
