Scott Williamson said:

"We're not getting the breaks now, and that's the bottom line," Williamson said. "Guys are hitting the cover off the ball. If people watch the game, they're hitting the ball hard."

The context was Muskat asking whether Dusty is to blame for the team's woes. What freakin' game was he watching?

This is the sort of pathetic excuse making that is permeating in that clubhouse. Dusty doesn't hold them to any standard, and they go out and sleepwalk. I don't see any other team pulling this horse-poo. If you stink, say it, and tell the fans you don't find it acceptable either. The only two Cubs who don't run right to the excuses are Maddux and Barrett. I am so freakin' sick of this.

Get a manager who comes in and tells these guys what's what: "I will hold each of you accountable; I expect concentration and effort; and if I ever see a three pitch inning again, I'll bench your a**."

EDIT: And please, Mr. Williamson, go the store and buy a map that shows you the way to the strike zone. What do the team's hitters have to do with the fact that you couldn't hit the broad side of a barn right now?

I think 9-5 before the injury and 6-17 since says it all.

Fire Hendry now. Didnt provide the help when we needed it. Now we are almost 10 out and you can just about stick a fork in us. Thanks Jim!

the full quote is actually worse:

You can't point fingers. It's not Dusty's fault or Larry Rothschild's fault or the players. Dusty has done a great job of getting us to push on. We just have to get some breaks and right now, we're not getting any

O RLY? It's no one's fault? It's just bad breaks and fate? I don't buy it.

That's been the story for 3+ years now. The collapse was nobody's fault, it was just "one of those things". In 2004 you couldn't place blame on anybody, things like that just happen and you just learn and move on. The lack of offensive production hasn't had anything to do with the team, everybody has hit the ball hard, but at people. And you just have to tip your hat to the pitcher. The disaster of 2005 was so unpredictable adn nobody could see the problems ahead, it was a bunch of bad breaks. 2006 has just been tough bounces and a little streak. Any one of these excuses can be tossed aside at the time as just something baseball people say because they really don't know what they're talking about. But when they are repeated over and over and the results are the same day in day out, year in year out, it can show an overall lack of accountability throughout the organization.

And on another note. Have you ever heard of a supposedly contending team go through a stretch like this and not have their GM out front saying something? Hendry's silence, lack of action and apparent ambivalence is baffling.

All you need know about Baker and whether or not the players are held to any sort of a standard can be summed up by this - prior to yesterday's game, Pierre and Perez were dancing in the dugout.
