The worst thing they could do is finish around .500. That would mean no playoffs, but it could also mean everything will stay the same. If you are going to lose, lose big so change will be made (and you'll get a protected draft pick). But I'd much rather see them win.

So they can use that protected draft pick to grab some "toolsy" high school OF who swings at anything within a three foot radius of home plate?

Dusty helped build this team though. He asked for the types of players he's gotten. If no one can win with this team, then lets get a manager that can help build one that can win. Do you think Dusty can do that?

Wait a sec? Sure he asked for those type of players but he didn't ask for all these injuries either. It's not Dusty job to build a team it's Hendry's.

He's a craphole manager without injuries.

Was he crap in 2003 with the proper players?

They should have been better than they were in 2003. They barely won the division. They should have been leaps and bounds ahead.

You don't really believe that do you? C'mon our bullpen was more then suspect and our 7,8 hitters were automatic outs. On top of that we didn't have a leadoff until we got Lofton and then we took off. Also Dusty out managed LaRussa in every way in the 5 game series in 2003.

Do you mean Bobby Cox, or are you referring to a regular season series.

I think Dusty deserves some credit as I do believe the team overachieved a bit in '03, but LaRussa ain't exactly Nostradamus.

Time to get rid of Dusty, and all of the coaches, Get a new younger skipper, and new blood on the coaching team. I have just gottin tired of lazy, non thinking players, getting picked off base and excusing that as hustle playing. Rainbows over the cut-off man allowing runners to advance, etc. We need to fix this team Mr. Hendry.. NOW

Sorry, I can't back that statement because I can't imagine true fans would want their team to lose.

fans with no foresight, anyway.

i, for one, want this team to get better, and the only way to that is for things to get worse.

i'd rather have the team finish with 60 wins, have the entire front office purged, hire someone who actually knows how to spend wisely and develop a different organizational philosophy than to middle through the season, finish with 70-80 wins, miss the playoffs, and have everyone who's part of the problem back next year. our current Iago, one mr. gary hughes, needs to be imprisoned and hit with a 500-mile restraining order.

the light must be seen by the tribune and it won't be seen with a mediocre team, this team must be exceptionally bad.

I honestly don't know what to say except I think it's a disgrace you guys want the team to lose? Our Cubs have had a losing mentallity forever and you want to keep that tradition for another year?

Do you think 76-86 with Dusty, et al coming back is better than 66-96 with none of them returning, using the freed up payroll to acquire upgrades at most positions and setting ourselves up for future winning seasons?

Nobody wants them to lose. Sully just wrote that he hopes they go on a 30 game win streak and win the WS.

Now I don't care one way or the other, but what people are saying is that if they lose they want them to loose big so big change can happen.

What is so hard to understand about that?

The regular season. The Cards Vs. Cubs 5 games series.

Who would we replace Dusty with?

My voe is Larry Derkier.

Leo Mazzone

Interesting. I've never really thought of him before. Has he ever expressed a desire to be a manager, do you know?

If he does manage I hope GN doesn't show too many shots of him in the dugout. He makes me sea sick.

If Leo wanted to manage I'm sure he would've did it already.

Even a blind squirrel will find an acorn once in a while. Most managers have very little affect on a ballgame if they manage with common sense. Dusty, on the other hand tends to lean the other way and probably accounts for a net loss on games where a managers decisions have an affect on the game.

I've lost count of how many managers I've seen come and go since 1986. Regardless of the annoying things Dusty says/does, a new manager won't make much of a difference with this current roster. Some player personnel changes need to be made. Our current rotation consists of 3/5 rookie pitchers. Our best hitter is hurt with no true 1B as a backup. We have 2/3 of the outfield that can't hit, etc.

I almost feel like Baker has been set up to fail this year. Not intentionally or anything, but I don't know of any manager that would work any kind of magic with this team.

I can't start rooting against my team after 31 games.

if dusty is crap...what is hendry?

which is worse? dusty's moves (pretty bad)

or the gm that signed jones to 3 years and 6mil a year..when no onw owuld have paid 4 for 2 or neifi for 2 years and 5 mil...when he wouldn't have sniffed a mil for a 1 year!

or gave us this lineup?

or last years

or 2 years ago

or the guy who wouldn't spend an extra 2 mil ayear on furcal but would give neifi 2.5?

who traded a strike out prone young outfielder with some pop, good defense and a great arm for nothing and signed an older, strike out prone outfielder with some pop, good defense and a candy arm...then paid him more than double?

i do not know where else you could put out the kind of payroll the cubs have, fail miserably and still get extended!

I agree...but it's the first place to start....one of many changes that need to be made in order for this team to contend.

Both leagues are full of experienced coaches that could be looked over as managers, Just like the marlins picked Garaidi(spelling), also the minor leagues. Time for Hendry to use his baseball smarts and find a young manager that can spark this team. Other teams win with players like the Cubs have, we should not go this many years without a world series, The sweetr livable Cubs are gone now. TIME TO WIN or change, first the manager and coaches, and then if need to the players, I will be a Cub faan forever, but I would like to see us in the world series before I die and I am 66 years old

I can't argue a whole lot with what you've said.

Apparently, MacPhail thinks Hendry's doing a great job (i.e. contract extension).

I think we're stuck with this managment mentality for quite a while.

Well, we are and we aren't. Looking at this message board, it seems as though apathy to this team is at a pre-1998 high. Its not like people stop being Cubs' fans, just that when the team is being run like this, you can reprioritize things for a couple of years.

I don't believe the apathy has reached that level. I see a lot of pissed off Cubs fans pretending they don't care about the losses. But this isn't quite like the 90-97 era.

Poor writing on my part...I meant lowest since 1998, not as bad as it was in the mid 1990's.

I think the apathy was pretty high from 99-02. 2003 stirred the pot much more than '98 did. 2003 gave people a sense that they were on the verge of greatness. '98 just reminded people how fun a good team can be. But they knew it wasn't in it for the long haul.
