The radio broadcasts make it sound as if it were more than an accident. Even the home announcer was condemning it. It'll be interesting to see what the outcome of the investigation is.

PTI just showed a video. It goes like this...

Called strike 3, Young says a few words, gets the boot, then walks off camera. A few seconds later, you see the bat come flying in from the left and hits the umpire. Most of it got his chest protector, but it looks like the knob of the bat may have hit him in the chin.

This was most definately intentional. It was not an underhand "flip," it was an underhand throw.

I just saw video on PTI and dang was the bat moving. Couldn't see if it was intent to hit him or not. He has been suspended indefinitely.

I did find the catchers lack of reaction to the ump getting hit by a bat funny. It was almost like "Eh, he was an ass anyway."

ESPN News had a little blurb on this incident that I found a little funny...

I don't recall exactly what they said word for word, but here's the gist of it, with the important part bolded:

"Delmon Young has been suspended for a game pending an investigation into an incident where his bat struck an umpire..."

ESPN is going to be all over the Delmon Young bandwagon when he comes up, like they are on the Bonds bandwagon now.

Delmon Young didn't throw his bat at the ump. It's not his fault. It's the bat's fault, because it was the bat that struck the ump...

To me, it was almost like saying something like "steriods were injected into Bonds" instead of "Bonds took steroids."

I haven't seen video yet, so it's tough to comment. But if he just tossed it in the air and it brushed the ump, I'd say "hit bat struck the umpire" is an appropriate description. If he threw it at the guy, that's different, but I don't know yet.

I didn't expect it to be coming that hard. It's no wonder the crowd reacted in that way. FWIW this isn't the first time Delmon has got in trouble for contact with an umpire.

But (as I think you said already), Delmon is no angel.

Wow, I just saw the video. He shouldn't play again this season for that.

You'll see it soon enough. And the bat was going in a straight line till it hit the ump. That was intentional.

Young was ejected and appeared to intentionally chest-bump home-plate umpire Jeff Latter in the ninth inning of the Biscuits' 13-0 loss to Carolina at Riverwalk Stadium.

After the game, there appeared to be another confrontation between the two in the runway from the field to the locker rooms.

Not the first time Delmon has tossed a bat in a game. Here's a report from April, 2005:

Last Saturday, in a home game against Birmingham, Young was almost ejected after being hit by a pitch. With his back to the pitcher, he flung his bat high in the air. The bat landed about two-thirds of the way toward the mound.

I think the best punishment for Delmon is to send him to the Cubs so he can get away from the Rays, a perpetually losing franchise.

For some reason, the video is choppy and skipping spots and I haven't seen the throw yet.

In the video I saw, he walks off screen, then you see the bat come flying back into the picture and hit the ump right in the chest. You don't see the throw itself, but it seems pretty clear he was throwing that with intent.

Or maybe he was pulling a Roger and just getting the bat out of the way.

Thanks, just found it at ESPN.

And, yeah....

EDIT: On a more humorous note, is Buster Olney evolving into Peter Gammons' replacement? Screencap from the ESPN video:
