pgcrosschecker's 2007 top hs player is porcello. jason heyward is number 2.

they have a top 2000 list for 07 HS players with scouting reports i believe. too bad it costs $200 a year to get it :(

Top 2000?!?

Just how do they differentiate between numbers 1100 and 1101, I wonder?

FWIW, I took a look at that top 2000 and it is pretty impressive and from whom I've seen on that list, it's pretty accurate moreso than BA.

its probably time to split this up to a HS watch..but anyways.. From a CSTV release on the Diamond Heels 07 recruiting class. Just the notables and their scouting reports...

Madison Bumgarner, Lenior, N.C. (South Caldwell), LHP, 6-5/225

One of the top left-handed pitchers in the country. Ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the state by Impact Baseball. Ranked the No. 6 prospect in country by Perfect Game and the No. 20 prospect nationally by Baseball America. A dominant left-handed pitcher with a low to mid-90s fastball and an effortless and clean delivery. Coach Fox on Bumgarner: "Madison is a great kid with a great future. He is blessed with a great left arm, but I am more impressed with the type of young man he is. He is very humble and grounded. He obviously gets a great deal of attention but he handles himself with a great deal of maturity. He is passionate about helping North Carolina win a national championship, and we are so excited he chose to be a Tar Heel."

Matt Harvey, Mystic, Conn. (Fitch), RHP, 6-4/190

Ranked the No. 1 prospect in the country by Baseball America and the No. 5 prospect in the country by Perfect Game. A very athletic right-handed pitcher that has great stuff. His fastball has reached the mid-90s, and he also has an outstanding curveball. Played for his father Ed at Fitch High School. Coach Fox on Harvey: "Matt has a great body and obviously a great arm. We love his demeanor and his attitude about competing. He is a great athlete that has a very bright future in this game. He loved our pitching program, and the way Andrew Miller and Daniel Bard developed. We are honored that Matt chose the University of North Carolina, and he can certainly help us reach the goals we have set for our program."

Rick Porcello, Chester, N.J. (Seton Hall Prep), RHP, 6-5/195

Ranked the No. 2 prospect in the nation by Baseball America. Ranked as the No. 16 prospect in the nation by Perfect Game. A dominant and polished right-handed pitcher that throws in the mid-90s. Also has a dominant breaking ball. A great student that comes from a great high school program at Seton Hall Prep. Coach Fox on Porcello: "Rick is a great kid, a great student and had a strong desire to be a Tar Heel. Even though he is a projected first-round pick, Rick has a strong desire to spend his college career in Chapel Hill. He is a kid with great character and comes from a great family. He is also very mature in the way he has handled all of his success. Rick could have gone to any school in the country so obviously we are excited Rick chose the University of North Carolina."

charlie (chicago): Who winds up with Wieters: Tampa, KC, Chicago, or lower?

SportsNation Jim Callis: (3:06 PM ET ) Cubs.

I'm sure he'll be scouted defensively just a little. :)

From my limited reading on these kids, (after Price) Harvey intrigues me the most.

Does BA just rank them or do they have any blurbs on them? If they have any blurbs, can anyone tell us what they said for the big three: Price, Brackman, and Weiters. Thanks.

That HS 100 doesn't appear to be much different than before despite the Jupiter tourney last Fall.

PG Crosschecker also has their JUCO series today, it mentions several Cubs DF&E's.

I'd post this in the 2008 prospect thread, but no one has made it.

it looks like this year BA will have 1 scouting report in their college weekend dish.

Ill only post a small paragraph though, but it's over USD's Brian Matusz who shut down the Horns today. I didnt get to go, but expect to be out there tomorrow. I have a friend who does some scouting for the Horns, I imagine he was there.

Here's how one National League scout broke down Matusz:

He's got three above-average pitches. He's got a very good changeup, a very good curveball, and an above-average fastball. He's lefthanded, 6-foot-4 with projection--his frame's gonna fill up. He gets you excited. Hopefully I don’t have a shot at him next year, because that means we didn't have a very good year. There are some things he can work on and improve, but his arm works. There's a couple of things, they've cleaned him up a little bit, but he's really good. I've seen him up to 94 (mph). He's 91-94, with movement and late life. He'll drive (his fastball) in on a hitter real hard. It sets up everything else, because he's got a very, very good changeup and a very good curveball too. He's got it all together.

closing the book on Price after 5 2/3 innings and 95 pitches. He finished with three earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six. The gaggle of scouts assembled behind home plate were dutifully impressed by Price’s 92-95 mph fastball with good tailing action and his 82-84 slider, though his command was spotty at times, especially early in the game. That’s to be expected in early February.

Andrew Brackman was in better shape Friday than BA’s Stalker radar gun, which worked fine but which was not set up properly by those of us working the gun. Maybe it was the cold; more likely, we hadn’t used the gun since Alan Matthews’ trip to Jupiter, Fla., for a showcase in October. Anyway, three members of the BA team braved the mid-30s weather and cold breezes at N.C. State’s Doak Field to see Brackman–listed at 6-foot-10, probably looming at around 7 feet when it’s all said and done–make his first start of 2007.

Scouts won’t judge Brackman on individual starts or even on performance; he’ll be judged by quality of stuff and the durability he shows in his first full season as a pitcher, after splitting time between baseball and basketball his first two seasons. The two dozen or so scouts on hand Friday saw plenty–a fastball that Brackman used to pound the strike zone with consistent velocity. Our gun had him consistently at 89-92 mph, touching 93, but when we checked with scouts, we learned our gun was off (at least we caught it early), and Brackman sat in the 92-95 range, touching 97 and a reported 98, according to a local media member.

Either way, Brackman repeated his mechanics and threw quality strikes, a major plus if he can keep it up over the course of the season. He also flashed a changeup, though his arm slowed noticeably, and he appeared to throw two breaking balls–one the advertised knuckle-curve in the 78-80 mph range, thrown both for strikes and out of the zone, and the other a hard slider that came and went.

In sum, Brackman looked good. He picked up the win after allowing two runs (one earned), allowed all three of his hits in the fifth inning, walked only one and struck out three. Something to monitor–Wolfpack catcher Caleb Mangum, a fine receiver, caught Brackman but then came out when Brackman did, and is battling a shin problem that could develop into a stress fracture. The fact he still caught Brackman on such a cold day means the Pack coaching staff doesn’t trust his backups to handle Brackman’s big league stuff.

Both from the BA college blog (and I believe they are open to everyone). And I love this new feature by BA.

I still think we'll come out smelling like roses with either Weiters or Brackman, I prefer the hitter, but either will be our best prospect pick since Prior. Cautiously excited....7 foot pitcher?!!

I'm not overly excited at the prospect of a "VERY TALL" pitcher. Cause my opinion is....they will suck, eventually. Excluding Randy Johnson

Sisco

Rauch

J. Juden

Ryan Anderson

Chris Young

JR Richard

This is NOT an impressively listed of 6'8 or taller pitchers. Now Richard and Young turned out great, but everybody else has either stunk, suffered career altering injuries, or flat not miss big time. So forgive me...if the Cubs had a choice between Wieters and Brackman, I'd take Wieters everytime.
