CUBS PLACE LEE ON 15-DAY DL AND ADD RESTOVICH

FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 2006

The Chicago Cubs today announced that they placed infielder Derrek Lee on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured distal radius and a fractured distal ulna. In addition, the club selected outfielder Michael Restovich from Iowa (AAA) and transferred pitcher Wade Miller from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Lee suffered the injury in a collision with Rafael Furcal in Wednesday’s contest against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Restovich, who takes Lee’s roster spot, signed with the Cubs in the off-season as a minor league free agent. He opened the season with Iowa (AAA), where he batted .333 with 5 doubles, 2 homers and 10 RBI. He’s hit safely in nine of his 13 games played and has five multi-hit games.

Miller was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 1 for continued rehabilitation from right shoulder surgery.

I guess this is a good time to mention that NSBB has been added to the Chicago Cubs press Release Distribution! :party1:

How far back can they backdate Miller's 60 day assignment?

I think Opening Day.

I thought they can go X number of days back into spring training.

I don't really know, that's what I inferred from other posts about the situation.

I think it can be backed into spring training, too. IIRC, Prior opened '05 on the DL but pitched the second week of the season (Opening Day was April 4 and he pitched vs San Diego on the 13th, I believe).

It may even be able to go back into the previous season, i.e. the last time he actually appeared in a game.

The Cub Reporter says that the 60-day DL stint in this case dates back to when the player was originally placed on the 15-day DL (or time spent on the 15-day-DL counts toward the 60), which makes sense since the Cubs press release notes that Miller was put on the 15-day DL on April 1.

That would make Miller eligible to return May 31.

pretty smart decision to do this. Miller probably won't be back until June anyway and leaving Lee on the 15 day DL makes sense because there's that chance that his injury can heal faster than what is anticipated.

WTG DJaxx in getting the press releases on NSBB!

Thanks. I have to reiterate though that it's a site effort, I'm just the person that makes some contacts here and there. The site really has come a long way, and it's the efforts from a lot of folks that make it happen. Tim has done a great service to all of us by providing this site. 1908 and the Mods have done a tremendous job as well. And of course this site wouldn't be what it is without the talents and knowledge of all of the posters on the site. It's the credibility of the site that is making all of this happen. Hopefully we'll have some more news on this subject before long! Thanks again!

Why didn't they retro him on the DL for earlier? Its my understanding you can retroactivate a player to the DL to the day after he plays his last game in front of a paying crowd. They could have put Miller on the DL retroactive to March 1st and then, if he is ready to come off the DL in May, he can. At taht point, we can transfer DLee to the 60 day DL if he isnt going to be back by June 20th. We should have a better idea of how long hes going to stay out after he gets his hard cast off. It might not end up being a big deal, but up until this point it seemed as though he was a week or two behind Wood. Now, he isnt eligible to pitch until June 1.

I believe you can only backdate a player to the last certain number of days of Spring Training, not all the way back to March 1.
