I hated carrying an extra pitcher last season especially since there always seemed to be someone who got forgotten and never pitched anyway.

But so far this season the longest starting outing has been 6.1 innings by Maddux vs the Cards. Maddux isn't going to start throwing complete games in April, Marshall will stay on a short leash and has to deal with pitching in a MLB rotation for the first time, and I'm happy if Williams and Rusch can survive 6 innings. Who knows what's going on with Z and when he'll settle down and start pitching his 7 innings a game. I hope it's not WBC hangover, lol.

When Wood and Prior or Miller come back, they probably aren't going to be going 7-8 innings a game all at once either.

Our pen is going to get fried without another long guy in it. If they decide to stick with Rusch/Williams, maybe Ryu could get the next call for the middle innings. Replacing Rusch with Guzman/Hill is fine but he'd also be on a short leash and basically whoever he replaces would be the follow-up after Guzman/Hill is done for the game.

I don't see the point of Bynum with Pagan around anyway. Send him back and bring up Ryu or Novoa. And Wuertz better figure out what's going on and if he's tipping his pitches like I read. I didn't see him pitch last night does anyone think he was?

You make an excellent point. I for one would hate to see our bullpen get run down. That is the last thing we need. If we can rely on our starters to go 5-6 innings, our pen should be able to do the rest.

Consider me in the send Bynum down bandWGN. He doesn't bring anything that isn't already covered by someone else on the bench.
Bynum is out of options. That is why we were able to get him for just Koronka. There is no way that the Cubs are going to send him down in April, and expose him to waiver after trading for him.

In theory, you may have a point. But in application, Dusty won't use the 12th guy except for blowouts. There were times last year that the 12th pitcher -- frequently Bartosh or Hill -- didn't pitch for 10, 11, 12 days. If that's how Dusty is going to use that guy, I'd rather have the extra hitter.

I'd rather be without the extra hitter, so that way Dusty would optimally use his bench rather than waste a PH oppurtunity in the 5th or 6th with Bynum. That way if things go extras we have the better hitter in Rusch or Z hitting instead of Bynum. Yeah, that's how little I think of him.

Why don't we just keep the extra pitcher and have that pitcher be Glendon Rusch? Then we wouldn't have to worry about him pitching except in blowouts.

Now that sounds like a winner. I can handle Glendon if the Cubs use him to eat innings in a way you described.

Boy, what a waste of money though.
