Press Release[/url]"]OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A’s today announced that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Juan Dominguez from the Texas Rangers in exchange for infielder/outfielder Freddie Bynum and left-handed pitcher John Rheinecker. The Rangers then sent Bynum to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for left-handed pitcher John Koronka.

Sigh...

I can't believe anyone would be disappointed about anything Hendry would get for Koronka. Most people here thought he should have been outright released off the 40 man in the offseason. I made my one visit to Wrigley last year and was lucky enough to see the classic Koronka vs. Willis duel. Aaah, the precious memories of the Kornonka era in Chicago.

It has nothing to do with Koronka. It's that we have six middle infielders on the active roster and something has to give.

And it better not be Walker.

It was Theriot if not Bynum so the overall 25 man roster mix does not change much.

Does it make sense to then acquire another MIF via trade?

Bynum has played 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF. He's a supersub. I don't think you can consider him a "MIF" and definitely not just a "second basemen." Though this does theoretically make Walker "more expendable" which would definitely be worthy of a "Sigh..."

I don't believe there's any need to have another middle infielder in the system, including as backup for the big league team. And Theriot was only going to be on the team until they added another pitcher (most likely when Wood was going to be actived). There wouldn't be a need to carry Bynum, Neifi, and Hairston throughout the season. If nobody else gets moved, this doesn't make much sense to me.

Bynum was added to the 40-man on Cubs.com. Does anyone remember Hairston being listed as an outfielder before?

I would say it lets Theriot develop a bit at AAA instead of rotting at the end of the bench getting only a couple at bats a week.

Plus, Bynum is a poor man's Chone Figgins, right!

I was just think that he looked pretty good too.

around 44 SB in 600 AB at AAA? The guy knows how to take a walk too (up through Oaklands' system).

I've seen a lot of people here complain about defense and speed, but they have been pretty undervalued for the last couple of seasons (just look at Oakland's lineup, which reflects this). I was kind of POed that the new Cubs kick for speed and defense pushed walker out, but beyond that, it's a good thing.

So who gives when Wood, Prior, and Miller are ready to come off the DL? The only people I can think of with options are Murton, Cedeno, Ohman, and Wuertz.

At least one or two of the people on our 25 man right now are living on borrowed time...

Marshall also has options left.

I think I like Bynum a lot more than Macias, but this move ranks at about a .5 out of a possible 10 in significance.

Wasn't Bynum's deal that he was out of options?

He's been listed on cubs.com as an outfielder for awhile now.

Len Kasper just said on tonight's broadcast: Todd Walker is officially named the primary starting second basemen.

I don't know why that was such a difficult decision. You've got a second baseman who will play adequate defense, get on base 35-36% of the time, and allow Pierre to run. Sure, Walker is not what Perez is defensively, but what he brings in terms of run production has a greater effect on the team than what Neifi brings with the glove (in a starting role).

Some of this decision might be predicated on who hits 2nd for the Cubs. Neifi is the worst option and I don't think the Cubs want Murton in that spot even though he has the skills to have success in that position. Walker is the best canidate to hit 2nd.

I'm not overly concerned about Theriot getting his ABs in during April I just don't know how they're going to use all of them. And if they're not going to carry Theriot right now, how about someone who could actually hit for some power off the bench? Bynum seems pretty redundant.

Time to give Hendry a little credit. If we're going to skewer him for doing things like JVB for Ciamarella (sp?) and one of my personal favorites, Bear Bay for the egregiously-bad Cliff Bartosh, then you need to give him credit for something like Bynum for Koronka, which I think is quite the steal given that Koronka is a complete zero.

Hey, that was a nice run-on sentence there, too!
