Plus his wife is gorgeous (IMO)

When Kerry Wood first visited the seriously ill at the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago as a rookie in 1998, he could hardly bear to watch.

"I went on the Cubs Caravan and visited the hospital," he recalled. "I saw some things I wasn't quite ready to see. I specifically remember telling Sharon [Pannozzo, the Cubs' media relations director] if we can help it, I'd like to not like to go back and do that again."

But just as he did on the field, Wood grew up in a hurry. He could mentally take all the injuries and surgeries he endured. And Wood's maladies paled in comparison to the chemotherapy and radiation therapy ordeals to which the children were subjected.

When he met his future wife Sarah in July 2000, the couple soon found an affinity for the Children's Memorial Hospital. Wood buckled up and during his visits, he played games with the kids.

"The amazing thing with these kids is they're so resilient," he said. "With all the problems they have, just to go in and see their attitudes. It's off the chart how these kids stay. It's just so inspiring to go see them."

Just a feel good story. Say what you want about his injuries, the guy is ALL class.

Great story, thanks for sharing it. I think we all get caught up in players' on-field performances, or lack there of, and forget all the good that most of these guys do.

Kerry has gotten a bum rap for so long, like it's his fault that he has gotten hurt, that I really hope he turns it around this season so he can remain a Cub. Because, when healthy, he's still one of the best hurlers to watch.

This is a great story.

It reminds me of some things I heard about Will Clark in his days with the Texas Rangers. Most of the talk around town was about how big a jerk Clark was. Then, I learned that Clark habitually visited the terminally ill children at one of the local hospitals. They said that while on homestands, it was not uncommon for Clark to be there but that he didn't ever want it reported in the media because he was not doing it for the attention.

He's a quality dude.

It makes me want him to be healthy from now out, so he can remain a lifelong Cub as he should be.

off topic:

hey badger..you living in Uptown now? we should get together for a game sometime. I live near Lake Nokomis

Tnx for sharing that badger. What a class act. I have a lot of man-love for Kerry ... is it wrrrrong? :D He's still one of the most electrifying pitchers in MLB - I'm looking forward to his debut a few weeks into the season.

Nice move, KW.

Someone refresh me on how Kerry and his wife met. I want to say Gracie had something to do with it...

I know they are good good friends and hang out when he's in Zona, so I wouldn't doubt it.

I heard they met at Cactus, a south Loop watering hole near the options exchange, and that the future Mrs Wood was working as a waitress there ... no idea if this is actually true or not, just what I heard from a friend who works around there.

Like a real life "It could happen to you" (I thinks that the Bridget Fonda movie about a waitress meeting a guy who won the lottery) eh?
