The following is from fanball.com - a fantasy site. I see this as good news for the Cubs.

THE NEWS

After trade talks spanned several weeks about a potential deal to send outfielder Luis Matos to the Cubs for second baseman Todd Walker, the Baltimore Sun reports the talks have cooled significantly. The Orioles wanted the Cubs to pay the difference of the two players' salaries—the Chicago second baseman makes approximately $900,000 more than the Orioles center fielder—but the clubs have yet to agree on the monetary amount and have not made any progress toward getting the deal done.

Our View

The monetary issue along with the fact that it's looking more likely that second baseman Brian Roberts will be ready to play on Opening Day, have made this trade unattractive to the O's. Don't be surprised if the team tries to deal Matos sometime this season in an effort to open up a spot for prospect Nick Markakis to play.

According to the Pittsburgh Gazette, the Orioles looked into Craig Wilson but also were turned off by Wilson's 3.3 million salary.

Would a three-way deal that sends Matos to the Pirates, Wilson to the Cubs, and Walker to the Orioles be a better deal for the Cubs?

And who gets the short end of that stick?

Probably the Pirates, but they also save the most money.

FYI, that story is from the Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec.

Good idea, but the O's still don't do the trade unless the Cubs pay the salary difference.

The bucs could pick it up. But they do have Chris Duffy, who performed well at the end of last year. He suffered a concussion during spring (from Schilling) but is back in the lineup now. They may be worried about his durabiliy, shoulder and hamstring (this year and last). And after the season last year Littlefield said Duffy would have to compete with McLouth for the starting job in center (which was a ridiculous claim). So the point is they may not be too high on Duffy. I wouldnt trade walker, but a three way could go down with Matos and Welly going to the bucs, walker and money from the bucs going to the Os and wilson coming to the cubs would work better for the cubs than the straight up deal. Of course that doesnt get around the fact that supposedly the break down of the deal (besides the money) is that brian roberts is going to be healthy.

This does not make me happy at all. Fortunately, what is said in the media or happens in ST doesn't mean a whole lot right now. At least not to me. If Hairston sees far more significant playing time than Walker, the team could be in some serious trouble. I'm sorry, but I'm just not a fan of Hairston's game.

But it's there, and he knows it. And so does Todd Walker, who appears to be the loser in the runoff for the starting second base job with the Cubs.

GAHHHHHHHHHH

:wall:

Means nothing. It's an article about the Hairston legacy. What are they gonna say. "all this heritage isn't going to earn him a spot"?

I'd rather have Hairston as the backup outfielder than Matos because he's better and we have him already. Plus, it give Walker more PT and an extra roster spot.

Using common sense like that is going to get you into a heap a problems. Next thing you'll say is that the Cubs should platoon Jones so watch out.

Funniest sig I have seen in a long time.

Matos is outplaying Corey,Orioles should lose interest.

No, they will probably use Matos' resurgence as bait to trade with another team. They still have other holes to fill.

The Orioles are still having trade dialogue with several teams, with a corner outfielder, a left-handed relief pitcher and a backup catcher atop their wish list.

Of course, if the Cubs decide to pay the 900k difference in salaries, at the last minute, this trade with Walker may still happen.

It's not "nothing." (dang double negative) Hendry and the Cubs have been on this "pitching and defense" kick all offseason, and this statement confirms what most fans were afraid of, and that the Cubs---as of right now---value Hairston's "glove" over Walker "bat", which is a shame.

Maybe we can trade Walker for Patterson then.

LOL, I know you're kidding but there are some rumblings that Patterson might be traded (not to the Cubs of course).

The Orioles would want more than Walker.
