Can someone share the link about the Nats LEAVING Soriano off the roster of the game in question? It's changed my stance on this whole topic. Apparently, Soriano didn't know he was scheduled to play as he was not one of the 9 players listed on the line up card in the game that left field was vacant.

According to two baseball sources, bench coach Eddie Rodriguez wrote two lineups on Monday. The one without Soriano's name in the lineup was on the clubhouse bulletin board for most of the afternoon.

"With me, I'm thinking I'm out of the lineup," Soriano said. "Before they made the lineup, I told them if I'm not playing second base, I do not want to be in the lineup. Nick Johnson called me at that time and he told me that they had me in the lineup, but [nobody showed up]. Now I look like the bad guy."

It's pretty funny how the coaches and club officials went out of their way to talk crap about this incident when there was a completely benign explanation for it happening. Hmm, trade for a player who is known to resist a position change. Demand that position change be made and then publicly bash the player for things he hasn't even done (or you've set him up to not do). The Nationals really hurt their case by acting like this if Soriano wants to file a grievance of the position change.

Nick Johnson supposedly called him and told him he was in the lineup, so he should have been ready to go. Soriano also said that he didn't want to be in the lineup, if he's not playing second base. The guy's being a complete jerk. If your team needs you to play the outfield, then shut up and play.

I'm not putting any validity in that mix-up. Soriano and Robinson had a conversation before the game. Forget the early line-up card (those change sometimes and it's not that big of a deal) - Robinson is the manager and he stated that the conversation he had with Soriano had him in the line-up.

And either way, it's not like that situation is why Soriano is being shone in a bad light.

MESA, Ariz. -- Alfonso Soriano is not a jerk. He is not a malingerer or the second coming of Dennis Rodman. He's just a stubborn kid with some pride who won't be treated like cattle.

I do not equate Soriano with Curt Flood for standing up to the demand that he change positions. The clear, bottom line is that baseball is a team game, and Soriano obviously sees it in another light. He doesn't want to be on that team or fit into it. It's obvious.

So give him $10 million.

And a .300ish OBP, yes, yes it does.

But...but...but...

He went to two world series in 7 years! That means something right?

Never mind he played for the Yankees. They were there because of him. The Marlins made it because of Alex Gonzalez, the White Sox because of Juan Uribe, the Angels because of Adam Kennedy, the Diamondbacks because of Tony Womack, and the Red Sox because of Orlando Cabrera.

No, no.. The Sox won the Series because of the gritty, hard-nosed Scott Podsenik. Didn't you know?

Since it is obvious that the Cubs are trying to trade Walker, I would love to see the Cubs get Soriano as long as they get him cheap and the Nationals pay a decent chunk of his salary. His defense stinks, but what he would add to the lineup would more than make up for it. It is said that he averages one error every week, but how many HRs, RBI, and stolen bases would he average in a week. Actually, I'm surprised an AL GM hasn't tried to get him to DH. The funniest thing about all of this is that the Bowden traded two good outfielders for a 2B that refuses to play the OF.

By the way, this whole thing doesn't add up. If Soriano's name wasn't on the lineup card, then wouldn't someone else (the actual left-fielder on the lineup card) have trotted out to left field?

Soriano's an idiot, and he's probably lying on top of it.

Except it was 2 mlb sources that brought up the lineup card thing, not Soriano.

"Sources". Yeah right.

Then why wasn't anybody in left field? I'm sorry, but it seems like more than a coincidence that

1) Soriano has openly said that he won't play left field and

2) There was no left fielder and

3) Nick Johnson knew that Soriano was supposed to be in left field.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the box, but I know that two and two don't add up to three.

I heard Charlie Steiner on XM this afternoon talking about the lineups. He said he was told by one of the Nationals coaches before the game thast Soriano was not going to play. He went on to say that the lineups in the press box showed Soriano was in the lineup.

Soriano thought he wasn't playing (reinforced by the lineup he saw), got in street cloths and wasn't in the dugout where the new lineup was posted. No one notified him until Johnson called him during the game (during, not before).

It not a coincidence. It's either a miscommunication or the Nationals were trying to make Soriano look bad and force his hand.

yeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!! soriano will save us..he's Neifi-esqe!!!!!!

Well if he continues to play LF, he'll save us by not allowing Hendry to trade for him.

Murton and Pie for Soriano.

What about a Mutton Pie for Soriano?

It is a very, very bad idea. Bad in terms of the Mike Dukakis presidential campaign, bad.

I wouldn't want him. Not surprised he caved in once threats of suspending him took place.

He needs to shut his mouth and do what Robinson tells him to do. All the idiotic crap Robinson had to put up with as the 1st black manager, I never thought this would be part of it.

If he is so unwilling to switch positions during his FA year, will he be willing to charge hard towards the OF wall? What about a short fly between him and the SS?

If I'm a teammate or a coach, this sends a red flag as far as where his priorities are. Right now, his priorities are on his own behind.

He won't have to worry about crashing into the OF wall because he will be traded as soon as Bowden can get enough to save face. I don't understand why people are surprised that he backed down and went out to play LF, since he isn't stupid enough to lose $10 million and his free agent year. If I were an AL GM, I would be interested in trying to get him as a DH.

When asked this moring if he was going to play left today Soriano told some ESPN talking head " I don't know I have to call my agent". Sounds to me like he knew he was in the lineup.

I doubt if he'd be willing to DH, since there's not going to be any money in it, long-term. The money is in being a very good-hitting second baseman. Hopefully every GM in the league will realize that he's horrible defensively, and wont' give him a chance.

interestingly, this likely would've been a better strategy for getting his way

"you can put me in the outfield, but it'll probably make me mad and then who knows how well i'll play"
