FTR, Sean Marshall has 4 starts above Daytona. Rich Hill completely dominated AA and AAA last year for 20 starts.

4 starts? Where are you getting that number from?

He's had 10 starts at West Tenn over the past two seasons with 54 IP between those starts.

Jenkins grounds to Cedeno, who flips to Walker for the force at 2B.

Through 2 and 1/2, it's 2-0 Cubs. Pierre will lead off next half-inning.

I thought Hairston was playing 2B today?

Hairston is at second; Walker at first.

Pierre double, hairston bunts him over and Ramierez drives him in(Error or not )

Good tiding for the future :)

Whoops, forgot/didn't see his 2004 work at AA. FWIW, he was awful in that stint. Much better the second time around.

ARam groundball past hall (ruled a basehit, but it was an error). RBI single.

3-0 Cubs.

We sure are executing with men in scoring position and less then two outs this spring, be it hits, contact, or sac flys.

10 pitches, 9 strikes in the third. 37/27 for the game so far.

I'd give Marshall the nod simply for his ability to not give up baserunners. He's always been efficient, because he won't walk hitters. Pittsburgh would be a good team for him to face for his 1st ML start. Guzman has excellent control also, but it hasn't been the same since his most recent injury. The most important thing early on is to get a guy thru 5 innings pretty with a decent pitch count, and Marshall has the best ability to do that.

Walker successfully sac bunts Pierre to 3rd. Aramis up with one out, man on 3rd.

Infuriating.

:?:

Sacrifice bunting with no one out, and with your two hitter, who is left handed, and in a spring training game, and early on in said spring training game. Stupid to the nth degree.

OK. Then, shouldn't that be Cedeno flipping to Hairston for the force at 2B? If the 1B-man has to cover 2B, I don't want to know what the 2B-man is doing.

I would think this IS the time to see who is good at sacrificing etc.

That's small ball for you. You're going to see that crap a lot this year.

I don't know if what should have been a groundball out is really executing.

How many runs did we leave on the bases in those situations last year? I think i counted one time in the middle of the season and we'd left like 13 runners on 3rd with less than 2 outs in just the prior week and a half....if we can do better at just that aspect of the game this year we'll be an improved team.

I ***HATE*** it when Dusty bunts with a left handed batter with nobody out and a runner on second.

It's idiotic.

He was awful because the Cubs decided to double jump him from Lansing since he was making mincemeat out of the competition in Low A (see: 51/4 K/BB). I think that there's a reasonable chance he could have settled in if he hadn't had that bizarre finger injury end his season. He had only racked up 13 starts in 2004, so I think the Cubs would have stuck with him there to see if he could have worked his problems out.
