7-4 in the other game as Wuertz is getting shelled.

Wuertz has looked bad. It's making the Howry signing look even better. Last year, had Wuertz performed like that, I would have been worried.

Now, with Dempster closing and Howry, Eyre, Williamson, and Ohman ahead of Wuertz in the pen, his role is not nearly as important.

Wuertz's success is based more on location than the dominance of his "stuff." Pitchers like that tend to do more poorly early in ST, as they're working to reestablish their control and feel for the zone. I'll be worried if he isn't showing signs of improvement towards the end of ST. I'm hoping he'll be looking closer to normal in about another week or so.

I'm hoping he will too, but I was just pointing out his role in this bullpen isn't as critical.

In close games late, the Cubs are likely to turn to Eyre and Howry ahead of Dempster.

The games I see Wuertz pitching in will be blow-outs (either way), 5th-6th inning when the starter leaves early, or in games when Howry, Eyre, Ohman have pitched too many consecutive games. I don't think we'll see Wuertz in the 7th or 8th of too many close games.

He had a great slider at the end of last year. I wonder if he's just struggling with his command.

Not sure exactly what the rules are, but at least for split-squad games, the big league club can bring up just about anyone to fill out the roster for that day.

Usually players are sent to minor league camp sooner rather than later so they can get more at bats or innings pitched than they would in big league camp.

Well it was a pretty well pitched game for big Z and Williamson looked good (sorta lost track of the game a bit after that), but the offense was nowhere to be found for the 2nd straight day.

Let's hope the offense being down today is due to the split squad factor (wishful thinking, I know...)

I'm pretty sure it's not wishful thinking - it's true. I'm pretty sure that our offense has been present the whole spring training.

Plus offense isn't going to be present every single game.

We havent fielded our entire regular season starting lineup yet this spring. Things will be interesting once we start playing our regulars every day.

Most other teams can say the same thing with a couple of key players in the WBC. Of course, most other teams aren't missing DLee though...:D

I don't know how people can be complaining really. We have Aramis as our one slugger hitting 3rd. No Dlee, no Barret to back him up with some slugging. . Anyway we are at .500 during the spring or around that. I see no real problems at all in ST. Murton is doing good, Cedeno is coming around, and we are scoring runs. Who's complaining about our offense anyway?

We're Cubs fans...we're the eternal optimists. If they're not scoring the 10 runs a game that we expect, of course we're going to complain about the offense :D

I think the split squad may have had something to do with it

in the two games Sunday

Pierre 0-3

Walker 0-2 (BB) , Hairston 1-3 (2B)

Aram 2-2

Lee --

Jones 2-3

Murton 2-3

Barrett 0-3

Cedeno 1-2 (2B)

that's a nice three turns through the lineup.
