MLB.com[/url]"]In a press conference on Thursday at Knology Park, the Blue Jays announced that they had agreed to a three-year, $40 million contract extension with their prize pitcher through the 2010 season. Halladay, who had been signed through 2007, will make $10 million in 2008, $14.25 million in 2009 and $15.75 million in 2010.

"To me, he stands for the Toronto Blue Jays," Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said recently.

Halladay, 28, signed a four-year, $42 million contract in January 2004. The 2003 American League Cy Young Award winner is scheduled to make $12.7 million this year and $12.8 million in '07.

As part of his extension, Halladay will donate $100,000 to the Jays Care Foundation in each year of the new contract.

I haven't exactly followed Halladay's career much, but when I looked up his stats, the main thing that jumped out at me was that he threw 239.1 IP in 2002 and 266 IP in 2003.

That's a lot of innings.

Wow, Toronto is spending the big bucks this offseason. Clearly, the winners for best offseason in the AL, arguably for both leagues.

AJ Burnett

BJ Ryan

Bengie Molina

Lyle Overbay

Troy Glaus

Extend one of the best pitchers in the majors through 2010 (Halladay)

Is this an indication that the BlueJays don't think the free agent starting pitching market is going to settle down?

An interesting conclusion. It's really been an issue of supply and demand these last few years, with everyone wanting pitching and there not really being that many good pitchers hitting the market.

And next year's free agent crop is going to be as deep as it's been in a long time. As of right now, it's highly likely that Andy Pettitte, Mark Mulder, Barry Zito, Jason Schmidt, Kelvim Escobar, Jose Contreras, Jeff Weaver, Wade Miller, Greg Maddux and Brad Radke will all become free agents, and Kerry Wood and Mike Mussina may have a team options bought out.

It is interesting timing. Maybe they feel Boston is ready to slide, and the Yankees are getting older and older. Maybe they felt this was the year to start making a run. Maybe they felt that with the right combination of free agent signings along with the youth movement that they are currently having, along with a couple of their players hitting their prime years, maybe this was the year to go for it. Maybe there target year is actually 2007, and getting all the pieces in place in 2006 to make that run in 2007 is their strategy.

It's interesting, because just a few short years ago, they were selling off every big dollar player they could.
