I'm not sure they have been given the ok by the proper authorities - they are just talking on the radio - you can say anything you want on the radio, it doesn't necessarily have to be true.

I think if they are going to do this thing they should do it right. If it is in the best interests of baseball to have this thing every 4 years they should shorten the season by the requisit number of games and have the thing in the middle of the season with ALL THE BEST PLAYERS representing their country and the starting pitchers going without a pitch count. It works that way in socer and hocky pretty well. Why wouldn't it work in baseball.

I was talking about this at a bar with a friend last night, and initially shared your opinion. Shorten the season, lengthen the all star break (but don't have an all star game). But realistically I think a post World Series tourny would be better. Guys might be exhausted, but those who didn't make it deep in the playoffs can get their rest. If you start it in early November and end in late November, guys will have plenty of time to rest for the offseason. Tons of players already compete in fall and winter ball, so it's not that much different.

I'm not rooting for the WBC to fail (I think it's a good idea and want it to succeed) but I would love for it to be held mid-season as well. Not only for the reasons you mentioned, but also because I think it would be outstanding if games were held in historic parks that aren't comfortable to play in in March or November. How cool would it be to see a US-Japan game in Wrigley or DR-Venezuela in the house that Ruth built?

 

I really don't see that happening, however. The owners won't be willing to give up 10% of their annual revenue by reducing the season by a few weeks unless the WBC gets successful enough to make up the difference.

I'm not a fan of shortening the season at all. Baseball more than any other sport is based on statistics and records. Having a 150 game season every 4 years just doesn't fly with me. I'd be more in favor of moving the start date of the season back a couple weeks and extending the playoffs by a week than shortening the season itself.

I don't want it in the middle of the season becuase then 95% of MLB will have 2-3 weeks off, and that is just too long. Have it in November, if the players complain then don't let them play. Soccer players get less than 3 months off, and play the WC in there off season and every single player would die just to play for their country.
