General manager Jim Hendry has met twice recently with Casey Close, the agent for Lee. The two sides, according to those in the know, haven’t exchanged hard numbers, but a good deal of “foundation” work has been done.

It’s possible a deal could be struck by April 1, but the Cubs aren’t setting any deadlines. Lee is playing first base with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

less than 5 years, Jim.

It may take 5 years. The Cubs get knocked on all the time for not signing the big name, but that's because they usually don't offer the years the big names require.

This is one deal where I'd be utterly shocked if it didn't materialize before the start of the season. Hendry wants him here, Lee seemingly wants to be here, and the agent is aware of both.

I just hope Lee's signing isn't contingent on Baker being around. All we need are players swearing their allegance to Dusty the Clown. It'd make it even that much harder to get rid of the guy.

Then trade him for some decent prospects.

I absolutely agree with that.

Not that I want it to happen, but Hendry wouldn't have the balls to do that.

How can you say that, if the players respect the coach? (hypothetically)

Isn't the players opinion of his manager more important than ours?

Not if the player is Neifi Perez or Lenny Harris. ;)

Their respect for the manager doesn't have anything to do with his competency to get the job done.

The Marlins would... and they won two World Championships

5 years wouldn't be a problem for me. It doesn't sound like he's going out to ask for the big money though. I would be horribly shocked if they didn't sign him to a decent 4-5 year deal.
