Keeping in mind this article was written just after the hikes for the 2003 season were announced...

In 1985 a bleacher ticket was $3.50 and a club box was $9.50. As recently as 1996, a bleacher ticket was $6 or $10, depending on the game. In 1999, just a few seasons ago, the bleacher seat topped out at $15. When I started going to Wrigley Field on my own, back in the mid-1970s, I used to sit in general admission seats for $1 (a discount for being under 14; full price at the time was $2).

nflation has been very low for roughly two decades now. Meanwhile, the price of a bleacher ticket at Wrigley Field increased 757% from 1985 to 2003. I'm not certain what the corresponding composite rate of inflation was for that period of time, but it's many, many orders of magnitude less. The cost of a bleacher ticket has increased nearly 300% in the last six years. The composite rate of inflation over that span of time is probably on the order of 10-15%.

Really says a lot when prime bleacher seats are $40 a pop now...

Haha, my mom was telling me all about that when I told her I got tickets. She said every Friday at Wrigley was ladies night and she got in free (or really cheap, I forget which).

Yeah, I thought it was pretty relevant as most of us will be gasping at our credit card bills very shortly.

$40 is cheap compared to what bleachers go for on stubhub, ebay, and the other ticket brokers.

I really wish people would stop buying tickets if all they're going to do is turn around and sell them for a profit.

Yea, how many roughly, do you think went to brokers yesterday alone? My friend was waiting from about 10-12am and didn't get in. I checked at about 9 last night and there was essentially nothing left. What other options do we have? When will the tickets they "held" back be up for sale? Obviously, I don't have enough experience going this route

Did anyone notice that on the Ticket Order Form that they gave to the people with Wristbands that there was not an option to buy anything better than Upper Deck Box seats? No field or club level box seats.

My memories are standing in line the day of the game for general admission seats.Same price for a doubleheader. Then being able to kick back and watch batting practice.

If you selected "best available" you could end up with seats that are ranked better than Upper Deck Box in the system (like Field Box or Terrace Box seats).

And how much has the payroll increased during that same time period?........

There were very, very few of these seats for in-demand games, though. I requested best available for the Cards 8/19 game when I got to the ticket window (9:40 AM, I was wristband 11546) and was offered seats in section 438. There were no terrace boxes or better UD boxes available.

I have no doubt it varied by game. I did end up with field box seats to a few games purchased for friends by choosing best available.

Were you buying 6 seats at a time? For high-demand games, that limits box seat options.

I was, but that was the best option even when I tried a piggybacked 3 and 3.
