For any Bears fans out there with NFL Network:

Friday is Bears day on NFL Network. The eight hours of fun starts at 1 p.m. with highlights from the 1965 season, during which rookie Gale Sayers scored 22 touchdowns. ChicagoSports.com[/url]"]Griese, who turned 31 on Saturday, has maintained he will be healthy by training camp. The Bears were comfortable enough with Griese's medical condition to schedule the visit, which is likely to spill into Monday.

Griese visited Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday and left without an offer. But a source said the Bengals intend to contact Ralph Cindrich, Griese's agent, on Monday morning, indicating they're not conceding he will be a Bear.

The Bears are looking to sign a veteran quarterback likely to supplant Kyle Orton as the backup and for insurance should Rex Grossman suffer another injury.

........

The Bears on Monday also will have further internal discussions on whether to match the four-year, $8.2 million offer sheet that defensive end Israel Idonije signed with Buffalo. The Bears are leaning toward doing so.

Elsewhere, Antonio Chatman signed with Cincinnati. The former Packer represented another return man who had been on the Bears' radar screen, although the interest was never serious.

After initially planning to address the return game via free agency, it's now likely the Bears will do so via the draft.

Everyone we were eyeing signing with the Redskins (Archeuleta and Randle El). Mcnown with the Lions. Now we have to settle for this Wesley guy and Brian Griese. I consider that pretty bad.

Griese is not bad for a back up though, but the other two was like a dagger to my heart.

Greise would be a nice signing.

I could go either with with the Griese signing. I think the clamoring for backup QB help has been way overblown in recent years. I don't think the 2004 team would have done anything of note with some of the available QBs people were talking about, and I don't think the 2005 team would have been any better if they had a different backup. Backup QBs are backups because nobody trust them to start. You are much better off drafting a QB late, developing him along the way and paying him a small percentage of the cap as opposed to overpaying for proven mediocrity just to give you the feeling of stability. Griese would be alright for a backup. But this team's future isn't dependent on its backup QB. Depth is much more important on the rest of the roster, where backups routinely play several snaps a game.

This is akin to the Cubs signing middle relievers and utility infielders, except the Bears don't have a glaring hole anywhere (see, Cubs RF).

I agree. Signing Greise would give me a little piece of mind going into the season though.
