I thought Jackson was better than that, but his numbers aren't great. Maybe with the new ownership group, the Rays won't be as difficult to deal with. Tampa officially has no bullpen right now. Maybe we could get the to go for quantity.

Walker, Guzman, Welly, Novoa, Aardsma for Lugo + Huff.

Jackson once was a top prospect. In the 2004 Handbook, BA ranked him the number one prospect in the Dodgers system.

He's not nearly as highly regarded now, and maybe the Devil Rays believe they can right his career.

We'll see.

Interesting trade, nonetheless.

Gives some hope that if Hendry is set on getting Lugo he won't have to give up as much.

I hadn't realized Jackson had been so bad. Tampa better hope they have something they can fix.

Also anyone know about the other guy? Top 10 prospect in their system? Top 15?

Chuck Tiffany is a left-handed pitcher who was ranked 10th in the Dodger system in the 2005 BA Handbook. He's 21 years old. He has a plus curve and change-up.

His numbers aren't bad, but aren't impressive either. He hasn't pitched above class A. He's still a good ways away from the majors.

I think Jackson was the Dodger's equivalent of Angel Guzman - great stuff, but had a hard time staying healthy. If he can get/stay healthy, that might not be a bad deal for the Rays, as Jackson had #1-#2 starter potential.

If nothing else, this hopefully indicates that the Rays are ready and willing to deal...

After reading Peter Gammons's latest article, it seems aparent the Rays are looking at young pitchers to compliment their young hitters.

The obstacle Friedman faces is that his priority has to be pitching. He has Carl Crawford, Rocco Baldelli, Delmon Young, B.J. Upton, Jorge Cantu, Wes Bankston and the core of a very dangerous offensive team. Unfortunately, the previous administration did not develop pitching; Dewon Brazelton was a No. 1 pick gone awry, and the last two No. 1s out of Rice -- Jeff Niemann and Wade Townsend -- have physical issues.

Friedman may have realized that he wasn't going to get the top prospect pitcher he wanted, but by taking Jackson he has a chance to have one.

Of course getting Huff or Lugo could be problematic.

Friedman has been criticized within the industry for being unrealistic in what he's asked for in trades.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

According to Ken Rosenthal's article, Tiffany was the key to the trade.

The Rays, meanwhile, acquired right-hander Edwin Jackson, once considered one of the game's top prospects, and left-hander Chuck Tiffany, a former second-round pick who was the key to the trade.

Jackson, 22, has regressed since his impressive 2003 debut, but still has upside. Tiffany, 20, is 16-9 with a 3.90 ERA in three professional seasons, with 279 strikeouts in 2121/3 innings.

I don't get WHY the Dodgers did this...

It's not so much that Jackson is a great prospect anymore, but they have so much pitching depth in their orginization that they can't help but have a crapload of relief arms.

Why trade for two more expensive arms?

The D-Rays got guys with good upside, but yea...I've never been much of a fan of either guy anyway.

It's a pretty meh deal to me, I'm just confused as to why the Dodgers think they needed more relievers, especially older more expensive ones...

The Dodgers are dumb. They just gave up Duaner Sanchez, Edwin Jackson and Chuck Tiffany for Jae Seo (who stunk it up so bad for the Mets before he went on the DL last year he was nearly released) and one year of closer Danys Baez...who will be used as a setup man.

Dodgers could have just stuck with Sanchez, signed Weaver, kept their young players, and have been better for it.

BTW, Jackson is just 22 yo, Tiffany just 21.

If I'm Jim Hendry, Monday morning I call up Tampa and offer Jerome Williams and Todd Wellemeyer for Julio Lugo.

It's very simple, the Dodgers want to compete now. jackson has been a disappointment for them.

They had to make room on their 40 man roster for the 16 middle IF's they currently have under contract.

Gammy says that so maybe his beloved Red Sox can get Lugo for less with a little press pressure.

The Dodgers seem to be going for it all this year. Although this trade is not a blockbuster Baez gives the Dodgers an option for the closer spot if Gagne is not 100% healthy. I still think the Giants will win the West if they can stay healthy.
