Corey has the power, speed, and defense what he doesn't have is patience, and a normal swing. The last two are killers and I don't think he could make up for those two. It really sucks that he didn't pan out.

going to get flamed, but I think the cubs got fleeced...again. Yes, corey has struggled and was one of his greatest haters on this board (well, actually, i never bood him in person), but he had done things at the major league level while these two scrubs are likely to never do anything at the MLB level. Worthless trade. Probably caps off one of the worst offseasons in recent memory.

Do you think this is a better move than non-tendering him?

Trading him is indeed a better move than non-tendering but he would have been good as a backup OFer especially now that we all know Grissom will be our guy.

Oh I agree with that. I think he would have been a good speed option off the bench as well, a la the Red Sox use of Roberts.

The key point, no concept of the strike zone and a swing with multiple holes are what did Patterson in and will continue to do so if doesn't learn how to recognize the strike zone. I'm not a fan of the Cubs coaching but, I'd be a fool not think they didn't work with him on pitch recognition. It's possible he may never aquire or learn that skill...

Don't you normally want guys who can make a little contact coming off of the bench? Someone who strikes out as much as Corey I think would be useless off the bench. Not ripping on Patterson, just the type of player he is, too bad to see him fail so miserably the last few years. His demeanor gives you the feeling that he just doesn't have the desire anymore (at least not in Chicago)

According to John Sickels' 2005 Prospect Book-

Spears was picked in the fifth round in '03 out of high school...He is the prototype scrappy infielder, someone who doesn't have awesome physical tools, but knows how to play baseball and enjoys doing so. He has slightly above average speed, a good glove at 2b, and the willingness to work the count and get on base."

Sickels gave him a grade of C in the 2005 handbook.

In the BA Handbook for 2005, Spears was Baltimore's 10th ranked prospect. They suggest he profiles as a number two hitter and could steal 15-20 bases.

Works the count & gets on base??? Must be a misprint..

I totally agree. I just posted in another thread that I do not blame the coaching staff for his troubles. That falls squarely on his shoulders.

Hmm, Nate Spears is intriguing. Suppose he'll play second for the Jaxx this season.

Anyway, at least we got something and opened up another 4 mil in payroll, not that we, you know, have anything to spend it on :(

I believe that late in the year patterson was brought into a game to pinch run and was promptly picked off first. That said it all about him last year.

What are you talking about??? Now we've got the $$ to sign Juan to a long term deal. :D

Not at his salary. That is a terrible idea for a 3 Million dollar player. Bench speed and defense doesn't cost that much.

The O's have acquired Sosa, Hawkins and Patterson in the last year. Anyone else find this funny?

Ouch.

They also wanted Burnitz but he dissed them at the last minute.

Hey, that's why they needed Corey!

They should be getting all our trash, seeing that the point of entry of a typical garbage receptacle is shaped like a capital letter O.

This is the KIND of deal I was expecting for Corey Patterson. Two things were for certain:

1: Hendry was not going to keep Corey Patterson at $3 mill to be a BACKUP OF. Corey is aloof enough as is....making him a backup OF would have been a useless. This means....Restovich has a LEGITIMATE shot at making the club.

2: The Cubs WERE NOT going to get anything worth get excited about. (remember Van Poppel, Brien Taylor were also former PHENOMS that were bums). The Cubs did alright, IMO, because they got two young player who COULD help the Cubs in a couple of yrs, which we couldn't say about Corey.

Decent deal, if you thought about. Corey needed to go....because the BOO BIRDS would have been out and about in 2006. Oh yeah...he had to go because COREY PATTERSON---the baseball player---SUCKS.

Who wants to give me odds on the following:

Corey Patterson's 2006 OPS will exceed both Jacque Jones's 2006 OPS and Juan Pierre's 2006 OPS.

I think he's got a chance. Pierre should be the easier one for him to beat, but Jones should be within sight. I'd say it's about 10/1 he outproduces both.

They would have had a better chance of having Corey be productive in a couple years than either of these guys?

I don't see how you think this trade was personality driven and not performance driven. Corey's approach and results brought this trade on. While Hendry deserves some overall bashing, this is really a non issue. It's doubtful Corey will be anything special, and it's doubtful Spears will be. Gesh, seems everyone is on the edge of the cliff...

I'll try to clarify.

There's no question that Patterson's 2005 numbers were abysmal.

Still, this is a team with a rookie in left, a fading vet in right, and bench that is so barren that Marquis Grissom gets a NRI flyer. Depsite Patterson's awful 2005, he's a young, cheap, toolsy outfielder that has had success in the past. The Cubs traded him for 2 players who will have no impact on the 2006 season and may never reach the big leagues.

I think there was more to this trade than Corey's 2005 numbers. I think management was unhappy with his overall attitude and approach to coaching. It was clearly evident that he and Baker were never on the same page.
