He must not freel too good about that decision.

I try.

That was bad....like....F'reel...

The Cubs should get Ryan so he could come to Wrigley Field and be a Wiggly Freel.

so what is the fascination with players that break the law but can play baseball allright? There was Bradley, Lugo and now Freel throughout the offseason. Am I the only one who would not want a player on the team that has a history of making mistakes and not learning from them, especially given the dangers associated with them?

An interesting question here is what is the limit on our compassion for a player? Sure Bradley & Freel put up great numbers, but is that all that matters?

I suppose there's some hypothetical limit for me, but it's tough to envision a scenario in which that limit would be surpassed and the ballplayer would still be roaming the streets ready to play baseball. Overall, I'd prefer to have the legal system take care of legal issues and the team take care of baseball issues.

Reagardless, separating the two wouldn't be right either because his job has something to do with the way that he conducts his life. I'm not saying that forgiveness is not possible but if one team wants to release a player based on his indiscrestions, why would we want to sign him?

It can be tough enough to root for a team when the team is only responsible for fielding a baseball team. I really don't want or need the Cubs to act as some sort of moral compass.

You're broadening the decision-making question to cover "indiscretions" vs. actual legal crimes. What if a team released a player because he was gay? There are all sorts of things that could be considered "indiscretions" by corporate suits that involve the way someone chooses to live his life and that actually really don't have anything to do with how well he plays baseball.

Carlos Zambrano has served some suspension time for his on-field antics -- and those do directly relate to how he does his job. Should Z be released for his indiscretions?

Do you think anyone would hire him if he were?

repeated violations involving dangerous actions should be looked at and addressed no matter what company you work for. And if you are a public figure then your indiscretions should be accounted for as part of your job performance. For example, if I embarrass the casino I work for with something I do on my own time, I should be reprimanded. No point to have a label be associated with an organization if it can help it. Look at the Portland trailblazers. People still look at them in a negative way even though there is only 1 player left on the team from the "jailblazer" days.

So basically he was being drunk at a bachelor party.

I would agree; however, you're not sent to an EAP just for being drunk at a bachelor party. I have a feeling there's more to it than just being drunk at a bachelor party.
