It appears that there won't be a Tejada for Abreu deal.

According to a person close to Tejada, Phillies officials have reached out to Tejada's camp to see if the 2002 American League most valuable player would make a move to third base. In no uncertain terms, the Phillies were told that Tejada would not move to third base and that he would opt out of his contract after the 2006 season if he were forced to do so. Tejada, 29, has played all but three of his 1,260 major-league games at shortstop and averaged 30 homers and 118 RBIs the last six seasons.

While unlikely, the proposed deal is not dead. Tejada does not have a no-trade clause. The Orioles can send him wherever they want, and Tejada would seemingly have to play whichever position his new team assigned him. However, players traded in the middle of multiyear contracts have the right to demand a trade or become a free agent after playing just one season with their new team. Dealing Abreu, and possibly a young pitcher, for a player who says he'll walk after one year wouldn't make much sense for the Phillies.

If Tejada will walk if the Phillies make him a thirdbaseman, then it doesn't make sense for the Phillies to trade for him unless they believe they can win it all in 2006. Without additional pitching help, that seems unlikely.

Also, the article indicates that trading Rollins isn't an option for the Phillies.

The Phillies, who have their own all-star shortstop in Jimmy Rollins, would like to play Tejada at third base. Trading Rollins or changing his position does not appear to be in the cards.

Abreu is a 10/5 guy so he has a no-trade clause. Don't know if the Phillies have gone to him to ask him if he's willing to waive it to go to Baltimore.

Why the Phils would not trade Rollins? I have no idea. At least try and get Mora, if possible if they were to include Rollins and Abreu. Edited by UK

There are people who believe Rollins is good.

I used to be one of those people who believed Rollins wasn't good, but his VORP was just above Rafael Furcal's last year.

Rollins is at least as good if not better than Tejada defensively.

If Rollins were the Cubs' starting shortstop last year, we would have won about 4 more games. If Tejada had been playing SS, the Cubs would have won about 6 more games.

Trading for Tejada makes a lot more sense for the Cubs than it does for the Phillies.

If the Orioles could somehow get Abreu and Rollins, though...

I should have said great. furcal is equally overrated.

this just makes me wonder why tejada wouldn't opt out of his contract no matter what if he got traded. Wouldn't you, if furcal was getting paid more? (well, as much as you after 2006)

Yeah, I kind of get that uneasy feeling too and if he does decline the free agent option I'm sure it'll cost whoever he goes to big time.
