I don't know too much about contracts or arbitration, but if I understand correctly, this might be a brilliant move by Mark Prior. This could lead a team to negotiate a new contract with him to avoid arbitration. And if he didn't want to be traded, he could ask for a NT clause in any deal he might get. Do I have this right? Is any of this legal? Like I said, I know nothing about that stuff. So if I'm completely wrong and look like an idiot, well, at least you know why.

This seems like a complete no brainer. Prior and his agent would have been fools not to exercise this option. I would think it was fully expected by Hendy since I can't think of any reason Prior would not have done it.

Depends on the relevant collective bargaining agreement, but it sounds kosher.

Dear Jim,

If you turn this into Maddux II I will personally hunt you down and make you pay for it.

You seem to have anger issues. Threats aren't appropriate here.

Here's an idea: let the mods police the boards.

I don't have anger issues, and I'd be right behind him the whole way.

I have extreme anger issues, and I'm in.

Do the Cubs still hold the rights to Prior through the 08' season? or does this void of his contract change that?

Yes, to the first question. The Cubs retain his rights.

I don't even understand how Hendry could turn this into Maddux II? Maddux was a free agent that Himes played hard ball with and lost to another team. What similarity does that have with Prior voiding his contract and filing for arbitration?

I wonder if this decision has anything to do with his name being dangled in the Tejada talks.

I think it has more to do with knowing he will get WAY more than $2.75M by filing for arbitration.

define "WAY." this early on in prior's career, i can't believe he's going to be getting anything crazy.

having to give prior a couple million extra doesn't matter at all if we can throw similar amounts around to horrible players.

im not sure that he'll make it to five million though. the arbitration system is especially kind to people this early in their careers.

I know Hendry and MacPhail hate arbritation so I wouldn't be surprised if they try to sign him to a 3 year deal to cover him up until he is a FA. I can't say I am too sure on the numbers but even at $4M this year he would seem like a bargain and that is almost a 50% raise.
