BASEBALL: Rays lose Perez to Indians

First baseman and designated hitter Eduardo Perez turned down an offer to stay with the Devil Rays and agreed to terms with the Indians. Perez, who hit .255 with 11 home runs in 253 at-bats in 2005 for the Rays, will sign a one-year deal with a one-year option.

He's a DH/1B. Not quite a need for the Cubs.

Yeah. Someone explain to me what the big deal is?

Some have suggested platooning him in RF. I have no idea how good his d is.

Doesn't seem like much of a loss, its not like he was going to turn around the Cubs offense or play much beside PH. How much did he sign with the Indians for?

He's played a grand total of two games there in the past two years, so it can't be too good. He's been absolutely terrible as a PH in his career (.208/.297/.359) so I don't see any reason to sign the 36 year old Eduardo Perez.

Perez started 46 games in RF for the Cards in 2003, so he can play the position, although I don't know how well. The main reasons to get him are that he mashes LHP and Jacque Jones desperately a platoon partner, since Jones' offense vs. LHP is unacceptable even for a utility infielder. It would be worthwhile to accept a defensive penalty in RF to replace a truly horrible bat with a very good one.

I can't wait to see the next thread on an awful player we can sign to play out of position.

I can't wait to see the next thread on an awful player we do sign that plays a couple of positions.

Perez has the arm of Zues...the speed of Apollo and the looks of Helen of Troy what's not to like?

At this point in the off-season, I really just can't get too upset at the loss of Eduardo Perez.

Signing him at this point would be like putting on a rain coat in a hurricane.
