I always liked Olivo. He would have been a better option than Blanco. I don't know how he got so bad offensively after he left the WSox but when he was with them he was good.

They're better off trying to see if Willingham can handle it behind the plate in a Piazza-type catching situation (offense, instead of defense). He'd have a very good chance of being the most productive C offensively in the NL.

 

Helms can play 3B and 1B and maybe hits LH'ers at a decent clip, I've never been fond of him though.

I believe Olivo was the only player last year with a VORP lower than CPatts. Something like a -12 or so. Could be a good gamble taking a kid like that after a down year on the cheap. If there's anyone who can turn him around, I would think it would be Girardi.
