If he would ever put up decent numbers, I would consider him. 10 mil for a mediocre pitcher who will turn 30 next year is a big no thanks in my book. A guy who throws 200 innings is one thing, we need someone who can do it productively.

To have a pitcher that gives you 200+ would be an asset in itself on this team. Z you can count on, Maddux as well, but his age and effectiveness still scares me going into this year. Prior and Rusch can do it, and Williams might be able to do it. Wood is obviously a major question mark. What scares me is all that has to go right for them to be competitive at this point.

Anyway the Cubs are after him?

Solid pitcher who can give you 200 Innings.

Bruce Levine indicated on ESPN radio this morning that he didn't believe Hendry would go after Weaver because of perceived value, i.e., performance delivered vs. price point.

Bruce thinks Hendry is very encouraged by Angel Guzman's AFL outings enough that Guzman may have a shot at cracking the rotation in ST. Also, Bruce indicated that Hendry will probably wait until early Feb. to see if there is a diamond in the rough from the non-tendered group of pitchers.

I don't like the thought of it. The last thing we need to do is overpay for a mediocre player. I'd consider it as a safety net, but the cost is just too high.

Thank you for the update.

I'd really like the Cubs to go after Weaver. Like I've said, I think he would be open to signing a Kevin Millwood type deal for 1-year and waiting a year on his big payday.

I'd be all for that, but I don't think there's anyway he'll be that patient and reasonable.

Judging from the other signing I bet he gets 4 or 5 years for a little more than 9m per. Yep, it's one of those offseasons.

The only thing going against him is there is no way the Yankees bid for him, and I highly doubt Boston wants a guy who busted in the Bronx. But with all the money going out to second tier pitchers, I'm sure he can rake in a 3/27 at least.

He's durable and a much better bet than Matt Morris who got 3/27. Besides, Boston and the Yanks haven't really been in on any FA starters this winter. Something tells me he signs with a team like the O's, Royals or Tigers.

By virtue of losing Byrd and Washburn, you have to figure that Anaheim will be a player for Weaver's services.

I don't know. He's already had a big contract that he didn't live up to, so I think teams are reluctant to give him another one. The similarities to Millwood are many. Same agent, same type of contract at a similar age, similar high HR allowed season.

Different market. When Millwoon waited a year there was hardly any money for FA's. This year there's a huge demand for starting pitching this offseason. Not to mention next offseason there will be a lot more top tier SP talent out there.

I beg to differ. Benson, Clement, Lieber, Lowe, Pedro, Milton, Ortiz, Pavano, and Wright all got at least 7.5M last offseason.

Actually your right, I was thinking of 03 for some reason. #-o
