Orginally Harrington was with Tanzer after several botched negotiations in which he turned down almost 4.5 million dollars because he wanted 5 Matt fired Tanzer and then signed on with Boras. With Boras he rejected a 1.25 million dollar deal with the Padres the next year. Then he was drafted by the DRays the next year for very little. He turned them down too. Then the Reds drafted him the next year he turned them down. The next year the Yankees drafted him, not sure if he signed. I don't think he did.

Draft pick by round

2000 - 1st - 7 overall

2001 - 2nd - 58 overall

2002 - 13th - 374 overall

2003 - 24th - 711 overall

2004 - 36th - 1089 overall

I cannot find anything that says he signed.

that is simply brutal. I would like to get that guy in a room for a little poker...

Randy Myers had some ridiculous contract. He made 14m in the final two years of that deal and never pitched an inning in 1999 or 2000 with the Padres.

On top of that the Padres actually were not the ones who signed him to that stupid contract. The Toronto Blue Jays did that. The Padres in a rather stupid move picked Myers off of waivers after the trade deadline because they feared the Braves might snag him and would hurt their chances in the playoffs. Perhaps the Padres thought the Blue Jays wouldn't let him go, though I doubt it because in the end they worked out a trade in which a minor leaguer went to the Blue Jays.

Yeah, I recall there was some sort of relation to Atlanta that year, but since I couldn't remember the details, I left that part out of it.

He gave the Padres a 6.28 ERA in 14 innings during the regular season

A 13.50 ERA AGAINST Atlanta in the Division Championships in 2 innings

A 9.00 ERA against the Yankees in 1 inning in the World Series.

14m for that? Yikes!

Albert Belle was mentioned earlier, but his contract was sooo bad, it's worth further mentioning. He played his final game in 2000. In 2001, he was the 8th highest paid player in baseball at over $12 million. In 2002 and 2003, he rose a couple of notches, and was the 6th highest paid player both years, again making over 12, then 13 even. Baltimore carried one of the highest paid guys in baseball for 3 years and didn't get a single plate appearance out of him. That's perhaps the biggest cause of their struggles at the beginning of this decade. That one contract handcuffed an entire organization for 3 years with absolutely nothing in return in terms of production.
