Here's hoping Ponson has a great ST, and the usually astute Cardinals are dumb enough to take his 30ish inning sample as proof he should start. Over/Under on Ponson's ERA next year? About 5.50?

God forbid a team buys low on young player in a low risk move.

Buying low on a young player with upside is always a great idea, I don't see what that has to do with Sidney Ponson though.

You people are forgetting he'll be wearing a CARDINALS uniform.

LOL, I don't buy that one bit. He's a project; low risk with the potential to be high reward but it's been a long time since he produced anything of quality.

He's 29 and was decent in 02 and 03. I really like this deal, it wouldn't shock me if he becomes a solid option in 06. It also wouldn't shock me if he never makes it out of ST.

On the surface, I like this deal (from a Cub perspective). But then I start to think about all the other Tardinal deals that shouldn't have worked but did. Then I just feel sick.

You know why crazy things like this happen for the Cards? Because they make a lot of moves like this and some of them pay off.

If a crazy thing "like that" happens I'll eat Sidney's hat.

Even with all of that booze in his sweat? You're a brave man.

How about an ERA of 4.10 and 180 innings? Could you eat a Cubs hat?

That by itself isn't much of an accomplishment (however, I think his ERA will be in 5.00 range). The Cards basically have to hope that Carp continues to dominate, Mulder is steady, and Soupcan gives them number three numbers. I think this means Marquis will be traded and Reyes is unknown.

The Cardinals rotation has more questions this year than in recent years.

I'd be surprised to see Ponson do any better than his '04 #s of a 90 ERA+, which I'd be surprised to see Reyes not put up.

Do you really want to see Ponson given a starting role, even with a dynamite ST?

Considering that's what we pretty much got from Marquis and he's going to cost next to nothing it would be. I don't think it's probable but it could happen.

I doubt Ponson will pan out but we need a bat and Marquis would bring one. I expect a lot of Ponson type deals from Walt in hopes that someone sticks.

Another question: What will be higher in 2006, Ponson's ERA,his weight, or his blood alcohol level ?

Even Ponson would be in trouble with a 4.1(CFICT's prediction) Blood alcohol level.

Woah, woah, woah... that was not a prediction. I'm not betting the farm on the fat bird.

LOL best post on this thread by far.

The Rednecks in St Louis must be going bonkers, they now have a new drinking buddy.

At least bad pitching always beats bad hitting. Cubs, consider the Jacque Jones trade officially parried.

Here's a thought, instead of trading Marquis for a corner outfielder, we should just make him a corner outfielder. How bout' an outfield of Ankiel, Edmonds, and Marquis?

Preettty, preettty, preettty, prettty, pretty good.

This means the "highly anticipation arrival of the king of the new Cardinal throne" Anthony Reyes won't be starting the season in St. Louis, not to mention....it gives the rest of the NL Central,a NEW Matt Morris to pound on.

Contrary to what you may believe, RotoWorld's tidbits are not official press releases from the St. Louis Cardinal's front office. Reyes is in the rotation. End of story.

The reward isn't even that high. Ponson was never that good to begin with. He was a decidedly average pitcher before he lost his velocity, now he's just goo.

Average pitcher? I disagree.

4.09 ERA in 2002, and a 3.75 ERA in 2003. While it's nothing to write home about, I'll take it from a #5 starter...especially one that's going to be making practically nothing.

Much like CardsFanInChi argued...the ERA of Jason Marquis last year was 4.10. How would that not be an improvement? We pay Ponson a tenth of what Marquis did, and get a solid outfielder in exchange for Marquis. If there's nothing to find, then Marquis and Reyes stay in the rotation and Ponson is our long man in the bullpen. I don't know what's going to happen.

I absolutely love the moves Walt is making this offseason. Some of them (not necessarily this one) are going to surprise some people. Low-risk, high-reward. While they look ugly on the surface... if they're bad, what do you lose? Oh, that's right -- practically nothing!
