The best part about this deal is that it's gotta be a multi-year agreement. SWEET. 'Cause I'm sure Jones is going to get better with age.

Dude, I love that speed in the 2 hole.

Thinking about what you love in the 2 hole is just about as disgusting as this report concerning Jones :x

This shouldn't suprise anyone. Hendry has stated several times that his priorities for the off-season was getting a lead-off hitter, improving the BP & the defense. JJ is a GG caliber defender.

I don't think too many people are surprised, just disgusted.

Disgusted is an over- reaction. They have no idea what JJ will do in a Cubs uniform. I would have never guessed & most baseball people I have spoken to, would have never guessed that D.Lee would turn into Pujols in 05'.

I'm willing to see it play out, before I completely chastise Hendry & Cubs management. This is why grading teams & GM's on their off-season is absolutely ridiculous.

You know, maybe i'm just overtired, but I cannot understand how Hendry and the Cubs could sign a homeless guy off the street to play RF and people will say "you never know how it will work out".

That's junk. At least Lee had the peripherals showing some sort of statistical bounce when he left Pro Player and came to Wrigley. Jones is bloody awful. Just terrible. Look at any metric you want. His BA sucks, his OBP super sucks, he K's too much, he's barely a 20 HR a year guy, he doesn't steal, his defense is inferior to Patterson's, and he doesn't deserve more than 1 year deal for about $4.5 m. AND to top it off, we're putting him with a coaching staff that will do nothing to get him to be more patient.

So yeah, I don't need to "wait and see" how this turns out. I knew how Burnitz turned out, and this is going to be worse than that, for a couple extra years. Hooray.

Calm down folks, this isn't a done deal. CBSsportsline claims that several outlets say they are close but what they actually say is that a contract offer is confirmed.

Most point to the Suntimesfor it's info. That article doesn't say they are close to a deal just that a contract was offered.

According to major-league sources, general manager Jim Hendry has made a contract offer in the last couple of days to free-agent outfielder Jacque Jones, but the Cubs also remain in a trade scenario for an outfielder. Hendry declined to comment on the matter Monday.

The offer to Jones is believed to be no more than a two-year proposal and not as lucrative as the three-year, $15 million deal the Kansas City Royals reportedly have offered. The St. Louis Cardinals also might be in the bidding.

Daily Herald

While still trying to make a trade for a right fielder, the Cubs have confirmed that they’ve made an offer to free agent Jacque Jones, who has played his entire career with the Minnesota Twins since 1999.

General manager Jim Hendry would not reveal the nature of the offer, but reports out of the Twin Cities have it as either one or two years. Jones made $5 million for the Twins this year, when he batted .249 with 23 home runs, 73 RBI and an on-base percentage of .319.

For his career, Jones is a .279 hitter with 132 homers and an OBP of .327. He’s believed to be fielding offers from the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals.

They're also still looking to trade for a right fielder. It's likely their proposal to Jones is only for two years. He has a three-year, $15 million offer on the table from the Royals.

Good work listing all the various links, but I bet this goes through in the next few days, and then Hendry starts focusing on Tejada and a starting pitcher.

Blueheart05, you're a buzz kill!

That's right and if you read those quotes they both say the Cardinals are still in the running for JJ.

Yeah, it was a real double whammy - the Cubs get him and we don't! I felt a rush of joy...

But you kow Jockerty, he'll end up signing Juan Encarnacion. Cause you know Jockerty doesn't want to play 2nd fiddle in the race for crap. But knowing the superhuman powers that is hidden behind the Cardinal on the front of the jersey....Encarnacion becomes the 2nd coming of Vlad Guerrero

You must have some inside info working for the oganization to know he will start working on Tejada and a SP. How do you know that? Pipe dreams if you ask me

Actually, I happen to also think he'll try and sign or otherwise find another starter, if for no other reason than after this season our rotation is losing 2 of the guys in it.

This season is not the right time to sign a starting pitcher considering the contracts which were given out.

I really think Weaver is undervalued and gets a reasonable deal.

Agreed. I'd like to see Hendry go after Weaver.

I read he'll accept arb if he doesn't get a good deal.

I think two years ago Weaver led the majors in quality starts. He wouldn't be a bad signing for the right deal.

Weaver declined arb this morning.

Rotoworld:

RHP Jeff Weaver declined the Dodgers' offer of arbitration.

Even though no one seems to be showing interest in Weaver, he's obviously still confident he'll get his money in the end. He's probably right. The Mariners would have been better off with Weaver, if only because he's so much more likely to stay healthy than Washburn.

Boras had Millwood sign a 1 yr deal last offseason. Weaver has a less than stellar rep in baseball, and one good year could set him up for a huge payday next offseason.

What's so special about Weaver? I'm much less than impressed with him, and I find him to have always been greatly overpaid.

Nothing this team does shocks me anymore.

I wonder how much people will be lauding our outfield defense when Jones is struggling to produce a .300 OBP.

I've said it before, and nothing will change my mind...

I'd rather have a good-hit, average defender than an average hitter with GG defense.

Boras can only do so much. Weaver isn't going to command huge money. Besides, the Cubs have a decent working relationship with Boras; he's the agent for both Zambrano and Maddux (he's also Corey's agent and I don't see him having much leverage for him in the near future).

He has decent peripherals, but the long ball kills him. I think he's really similar to Clement in terms of where he is in his career, and if we got him for 1 yr at 7-9m, I'd take him over Rusch and, quite frankly, Maddux. Plus, if he signs a more reasonable 3 yr deal, it would free up Hendry to use Hill AND Williams in a trade, and then maybe we don't have to settle for Jones in RF.
