...to a minor league contract

Rangers signed infielder D'Angelo Jimenez to a minor league contract.

Another excellent pickup for Rangers GM Jon Daniels. Jimenez had a miserable 2005 season, but he's only turning 28 next week and he was one of the National League's better offensive second basemen in 2004. The Rangers will likely have him compete with Ian Kinsler and Mark DeRosa for a starting job next spring. He should be the favorite, and if he wins the job, he could be a $15 player in the Texas lineup. Dec. 16 - 3:46 pm et

nope, he couldn't have been useful on the bench

Better and cheaper than Neifi.

Who are you talking about, you'll need to be more specific. You just described 99% of the shortstops and second basement on MLB rosters

Jimenez is a whining malcontent who couldn't even hit in AA last year. There was reason he was exposed to waivers mid-season and nobody claimed him.

yeah, you're right, we can't use a utility man who knows how to get on base. a call to macias is in order, huh?

All II'm saying is this guy has had issues everywhere he's played. By your rationale, every GM in baseball was stupid for not picking him up last summer when he went on waivers. Nobody wanted him.

The Reds sent him to AA after he cleared. I don't want a player who quits on his team, which is exactly what Jimenez did to the Reds last year.

And where did I say I wanted Macias?

if he's willing to play, he's willing to play. and i think he's willing to play.

Isn't it odd that his willingness to play shows up during the offseason when contracts are being handed out?

Stay far, far away from Jimenez.

i'd give him the minimum and put him on the 40-man. if he doesn't want to play then you don't have to pay him, correct?

I know he signed a minor league deal, its his only option. Why would anyone offer him a major league deal?

Sign a minor league contract (which will probably pay him at least a million bucks if he makes the team), work your butt off to make the team and guarantee your paycheck, then go into Operation Shutdown.

Jimenez is a genius!

Just enough to keep off the suspended list, I suppose.

I don't think it shifted, it has been a long day though.

Jimenez is a quitter, he's done it before and he'll probably do it again. Signing a minor league deal doesn't show a great desire to play. It shows that he has no other offers and now he's desperate. He knows anybody could have picked him up on a waiver claim last year but they didn't. The Reds let him rot in AA because nobody else wanted him.

He has some skills and some pretty good years in the past. I'm not doubting his ability. I'm doubting his committment and attitude, and I'm not the only one. So are 29 other GM's.

All the other GMs doubted Neifi's ability to play, as he was put on waivers and not picked up, but Jim took him, and mistakenly signed him to much too big of an extension, twice. I'd much rather have Jimenez than Perez.

Looking at his career trends, it appears that his first year with a team is typically decent. It's usually his second year (or third as is the case with the Reds) that he seems to be sub-par. Why not sign him to a one-year deal? He's capable of playing 2B, SS, and 3B. If he's not happy after that year, don't re-sign him.

Isn't one of Dusty's strong points supposed to be that he keeps veterans happy? Wouldn't this have been something that would have helped solidify Dusty's reputation in that regard?

Jimenez is a smart pickup. Wasn't he at one time the #1 Yankees prospect, or am I thinking of someone else??

You recall correctly.
